NC St national championship hero Charles killed (AP)

RALEIGH, N.C. ? Lorenzo Charles, the muscular forward whose last-second dunk gave underdog North Carolina State a stunning win in the 1983 national college championship game, was killed Monday when a bus he was driving crashed along a highway, a company official said.

Elite Coach general manager Brad Jackson said Charles, 47, worked for the company and was driving one of its buses on Interstate 40. No passengers were aboard.

He grabbed Dereck Whittenburg's 30-foot shot and dunked it at the buzzer to give the Wolfpack a 54-52 win over heavy favorite Houston and its second national title, sending coach Jim Valvano spilling onto the court, scrambling for someone to hug in what has become one of the lasting images of the NCAA tournament.

Whittenburg was despondent when discussing his teammate and friend with The Associated Press.

"It's just an awful day," Whittenburg said. "An awful, awful day."

Charles secured his spot in N.C. State lore in the final moments of that game in Albuquerque, N.M., to cap off an improbable run to the championship. N.C. State entered the NCAA tournament with a 17-10 record, having beaten Virginia to win the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament and an automatic berth into the national field. No one expected much.

"It's still kind of amazing to me that ... people are still talking about it," Charles said in an excerpt from his comments about the championship game on his N.C. State Web page. "I remember when (it) first happened, I figured I would have my 15 minutes of fame and that would be it. Here we are and it is still a conversational piece. I don't really think that was the only great Final Four finish that has been played since then, but for some reason people just single out that game and talk about it. Maybe because it was such a David and Goliath thing."

Police released little about the one-vehicle crash that took Charles' life. Video shows the windshield broken out with tree limbs sticking through the window frame. The rear wheels of the bus were on an embankment, leaving the right front tire elevated from the road.

Charles finished his college career two years after the championship win with 1,535 total points ? 15th on the school's scoring list ? and his .575 shooting percentage in 1985 remains a school record for seniors.

In the 1983 run, Charles hit two free throws with 23 seconds left in the West Regional finals against the Cavaliers to give the Wolfpack a 63-62 win and the spot in the Final Four.

Their semifinal win over Georgia sent them to the matchup with the Cougars, known as Phi Slamma Jamma in those years and led by stars Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon.

Michael Young, director of basketball operations at Houston, was a member of the team that let a national championship slip away. He told KRIV-TV in Houston that he's never quite gotten over Charles' heroics.

"For him to dunk the ball at that moment to win the game, it was one of the most heartbreaking moments I have ever felt in my whole career," Young said. "Twenty-eight years later, it's still with me. Every day somebody asks me about it. I thought I was going to get away with it today and then you called me. I'm very sorry to hear what happened."

Valvano also became famous for his emotional burst onto the court afterward, running around almost in disbelief. Valvano died in 1993 after his public fight with cancer.

NC State retired Charles' No. 43 jersey in 2008, the 25th anniversary of the championship.

Thurl Bailey, one of Charles' teammates on the championship team, said it's tough to accept that the player who made the game-winning dunk is gone.

"But I heard someone say, I was talking to them on the phone about this, that Jimmy V finally found somebody to hug," Bailey told WRAL-TV.

Current coach Mark Gottfried said his staff had just gotten acquainted with Charles and was saddened to hear the news.

"He holds a special place in Wolfpack history and in the hearts of generations of fans," Gottfried said in a statement. "We just reconnected with him last week and our staff was stunned to hear this terrible news."

ACC Commissioner John Swofford said Charles' play had an uplifting impact.

"As a former player, he made us believe in the amazing and all of us in the ACC send out our thoughts and prayers to his entire family," Swofford said in a statement.

Charles played one season in the NBA, averaging 3.4 points in 36 games with the Atlanta Hawks in 1985-86, and played internationally and in the Continental Basketball Association until 1999.

A message left on a phone listed to Lorenzo Charles wasn't immediately returned Monday night.

Marcellus Shale Fee Not Off the Table Just yet in Pennsylvania (ContributorNetwork)

Just when Pennsylvania lawmakers look like they will be able to get a state budget in place prior to the end of the fiscal year in almost a decade, GOP lawmakers are sizing up support to make a run at a bill or amendment regarding an impact fee on companies drilling for natural gas in Keystone State.

Because Gov. Tom Corbett wants to wait until the finding from the Marcellus Shale Advisory Commission are finalized near the end of July, a spokesperson has stated he will veto any legislation aimed toward a tax but might be open to a fee. Therefore, legislators have been careful not to attach any such proposals to the state budget, so far.

Voters support a tax or fee upon fracking to help ease the burden of spending cuts being experienced by the $27.15 billion budget. Lawmakers would like to return to their districts for the summer break with a fee in place. However, they clearly have their work cut out for them. At a time when school districts are being asked to lay off teachers and other staff as well as close buildings and engage in several money saving practices, some financial relief from a per-well fee could help.

Because the findings of the Commission are not expected until near the end of July, Corbett wants to make any discussion regarding imposing a fee an issue in the fall. Many lawmakers are conscious of the fact that many voters might be eager to see a fee through, and could eventually vote in a more tax or fee friendly representatives. Currently, Pennsylvania is the only major natural gas producing state without a fee or tax in place.

The interesting part will be what Corbett does if the state House and Senate can get a bill rushed through before the summer break. Since the governor wants to hold off, his own party members might attempt to force his hand.

Still, the spending plan remains the more important piece of legislation, and unless a fracking fee amendment gets attached at some point, the budget should be in place by the end of the week. Lawmakers are preparing for what will be a frantic week of hearings and debates in Harrisburg.

Video: Evidently Bowling Really Is That Serious | Los That Sports Blog

And what?!

On Wednesday the PBA released this statement saying that:

Sean Rash has been fined an undisclosed amount by the Professional Bowlers Association for conduct unbecoming a professional.

What did he do that was so unprofessional? This?

?

Jason Thomas of the PBA called it:

?The most controversial, emotionally-charged, confrontational televised moment in PBA history.?

Since I?m not a bowling fan I?m going to have to take his word on that. It appears Jason Belmonte likes to make noises with his water bottle as bowlers on the other team are on their approach. Cheating in bowling? It obviously didn?t affect Rash as he still bowled a strike and let Belmonte know he wasn?t to pleased with his antics.

Professional bowlers, we?re #BoutThatLife

Yankees still have no timetable for Jeter's return (AP)

NEW YORK ? Yankees manager Joe Girardi won't rush Derek Jeter back from a strained right calf, even though he's eligible to come off the disabled list next week.

Girardi also doesn't plan to take slugging third baseman Alex Rodriguez out of the lineup unless he asks for a day off to rest his ailing right knee, and provided no timetable for Phil Hughes' return to the starting rotation.

Jeter took 27 swings off the tee and 30 swings of soft toss on Saturday at the Yankees' spring training complex in Tampa, Fla. He also played catch for the fifth straight day but didn't do any running, which represents the next big hurdle in his rehab.

The Yankees' captain said it felt good to finally swing a bat, but even he has acknowledged that he's not sure whether he'll be back with the Yankees when he's eligible June 29.

"We just have to make sure his legs are under him and he can make those sharp cuts he needs to make and he can get out of the box fine," Girardi said before Saturday's game against the Colorado Rockies. "We have to make sure he's ready, that we don't push this."

Jeter is six hits shy of 3,000, a chase that's been on hold since getting hurt June 13.

"You come back too early and re-injure it, you're talking about a month," Girardi said. "So we have to make sure when it's time to go, it's time to go."

A-Rod said he's been seeing trainers since Sunday's game at Wrigley Field, when he tweaked his right knee. The pain hasn't been bad enough that he's begged out of the lineup, though he left late in Saturday's 8-3 win over the Colorado Rockies to give it some rest.

"There are some injuries you can play through and some you can't, and this is one I can play through," said Rodriguez, who went 2 for 3 and drove in three runs. "I think I'm getting better and I'm good enough to play."

Girardi said that Rodriguez has been "fighting through it," and won't necessarily sit him down unless the third baseman asks for a day off.

Hughes, on the disabled list since April 15 with right shoulder inflammation, made his second rehab start with Double-A Trenton on Friday night. He allow a run on three hits and two walks in 3 1-3 innings against New Britain.

Girardi said that Hughes wasn't as sharp as last Sunday, when he went 4 1-3 innings for Class-A Staten Island, and isn't sure when or where his next rehab appearance will happen.

"He threw a lot of pitches in 3 1-3 innings. He was not hit hard, he just wasn't as sharp," Girardi said. "When we think he's ready, that's when we'll call him back."

Right-hander Bartolo Colon, out with a strained right hamstring, felt good after his first bullpen session Friday. He's scheduled to pitch in a simulated game on Monday in Tampa.

Converted reliever Mark Prior, on the DL at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre because of a strained groin, also was scheduled to throw off a mound Saturday.
