Georgia Wills, Trusts, Estate Planning and Probate Blog: Atlanta ...

Tax increase.jpg
The expiration of key laws in Congress may expose more local individuals to estate or ?Death Taxes? after their passing.? Atlanta attorney, Steve Worrall explains these anticipated changes, as well as steps Georgia residents can take now to take now to ensure more money goes to their family?and not Uncle Sam?after death.
?

ATLANTA, GEORGIA (08/08/2012)- You?ve worked hard to save money, accumulate assets and leave your loved ones an inheritance after your passing.?

But according to Steve Worrall, an estate planning attorney in Atlanta, the expiration of key tax laws in Congress may now put more local families at risk of owing more than half of their inheritance in ?death taxes? after the first of the year.?

Worrall explains how preparing now for the much-anticipated expiration of the Bush-Era tax cuts (which were extended temporarily under the?Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act? in 2010) ?is critical for high-net worth individuals, but also for middle-class families, too.? Here?s why:?

  • If Congress does nothing and the legislation expires, the estate tax will revert from a $5 million exemption to $1 million on December 31st.? That means if your estate is worth over $1 million at your passing, your family may be on the hook for significant taxes up to 55%.
  • For many people, when you add up the value of your home, life insurance policies, investments and assets, $1 million is usually closer than you think.
  • The payment is due in cash just 9 months after you die (or the 2nd spouse dies if you are married), often forcing loved ones to sell assets quickly at depressed market or ?fire sale? prices to satisfy the bill.?
  • There?s a very real chance that up to half of the inheritance you worked so hard to leave your family will go to Uncle Sam.?

The good news, Worrall says, is the estate or ?death tax? is entirely voluntary and there are steps you can take right now to minimize your exposure.

He explains that one such strategy is to utilize the lifetime gift tax exemption, which also set to expire at the end of the year.? This law allows you to remove up to $5.12 million (or $10.2 million for married couples) out of your ?taxable estate? by gifting it now to future generations. On December 31st at midnight, the exemption amount significantly drops to $1 million.

In other words, for the rest of this year, Worrall says that parents can pass along valuable assets to their heirs up $5.12 million (i.e. a house, stock portfolio, part of the family business), without paying a single dime to Uncle Sam.

Worrall further notes tools such as living trusts can also be used to minimize your exposure to burdensome taxes after your passing. Your estate planning attorney will advise you on the best strategies to implement based on your wishes and financial needs.

Why Does This Matter Now?

Because proper estate tax planning requires getting appraisals, amending titles and creating airtight documents, Worrall warns that planning must be started now to ensure everything is finalized before the end of the year. He says estate planning firms across the country are already busy handling year-end estate tax planning, and encourages individuals affected by these changes not to wait until the last minute to get professional help.

For more information on upcoming changes to the estate tax laws or on Atlanta estate planning attorney, Steve Worrall, please visit GeorgiaFamilyLaw.com or call 770.425.6060.?

Winston-Salem, N.C. Manipulating a group of hormone-producing cells in the brain can control blood sugar levels in the body a discovery that has dramatic potential for research into weight-loss drugs and diabetes treatment.

In a paper published in the October issue of Genetics and available online now, neurobiologists at Wake Forest University examine how fruit flies (Drosophila) react when confronted with a decreased diet.

Reduced diet or starvation normally leads to hyperactivity in fruit flies a hungry fly buzzes around feverishly, looking for more food. That happens because an enzyme called AMP-activated kinase stimulates the secretion of the adipokinetic hormone, which is the functional equivalent of glucagon. This hormone acts opposite of insulin, as it tells the body to release the sugar, or food, needed to fuel that hyperactivity. The body uses up its energy stores until it finds food.

But when Wake Forest's Erik Johnson, an associate professor of biology, and his research team turned off AMP-activated kinase, the cells decreased sugar release and the hyperactive response stopped almost completely even in the face of starvation.

"Since fruit flies and humans share 30 percent of the same genes and our brains are essentially wired the same way, it suggests that this discovery could inform metabolic research in general and diabetes research specifically," said Johnson, the study's principal investigator. "The basic biophysical, biochemical makeup is the same. The difference in complexity is in the number of cells. Why flies are so simple is that they have approximately 100,000 neurons versus the approximately 11 billion in humans."

Medical advances as a result of this research might include:

Diabetes research: Adipokinetic hormone is the insect equivalent to the hormone glucagon in the human pancreas. Glucagon raises blood sugar levels; insulin reduces them. However, it is difficult to study glucagon systems because the pancreatic cells are hard to pull apart. Studying how this similar system works in the fruit fly could pave the way to a drug that targets the cells that cause glucagon to tell the body to release sugar into the blood thus reducing the need for insulin shots in diabetics.

Weight-loss drugs: An "exercise drug" would turn on all AMP-activated kinase in the body and trick the body into thinking it was exercising. "Exercise stimulates AMP-activated kinase, so manipulation of this molecule may lead to getting the benefits of exercise without exercising," Johnson said. In previous research published in the online journal PLoS ONE, Johnson and his colleagues found that, when you turn off AMP-activated kinase, you get fruit flies that "eat a lot more than normal flies, move around a lot less, and end up fatter."

Johnson's current study is funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. Co-authors are Jason Braco, Emily Gillespie and Gregory Alberto of Wake Forest, and Jay Brenman of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Product Review Enterbay 1:6 MEN IN BLACK 3 Action Figures - OSW

CLICK HERE FOR OVER 140 NEW ENTERBAY MEN IN BLACK 3 PHOTOS!

Enterbay's Men In Black 3 figures are available for pre-order directly through Enterbay, as well as through several of our fine sponsors, including BigBadToyStore.com and ToyWiz.com.

Quote:

Here come the Men in Black (Men in Blaaaaack)

Galaxy defenders (oahhaooohh ohhhhh)

Here come the Men in Black (Men in Blaaaaack)

They won't let you remember

Uh uh, uh uh
You know the song. Heck, it plays in my head every time I pick up one of these incredibly life-like 1:6th scale Men In Black 3 action figures from Enterbay. As a fellow figure collector, I'm sure you can relate. Catchy theme songs, explosive sound effects, popular movie quotes... they all go with the territory of "playing" with your toys. Fortunately for me, I REALLY like the Men In Black movies and the tune. And these new Enterbay action figures? Out of this world.

Released last month to those that placed advanced pre-orders - with a second batch shipping later this year - Enterbay's Men In Black 3 figures include Agent J as played by Will Smith, and Agent K as portrayed by Tommy Lee Jones. Enterbay's "Passion For Perfection" comes at a premium price, the individual MIB3 figures retailing for around $225 each or $376 for the pair. Getting them both together is obviously the better deal, and to be honest, I don't foresee many fans buying just one character anyways.

When collectors purchase a high-end action figure like this, they expect all the bells and whistles. Enterbay doesn't disappoint, kicking things off with a very sophisticated packaging presentation. Each MIB character comes in a large (15" tall, 6 1/2" wide and 5 inches deep) black box that resembles a foot locker. You know who is who by the silver "J" and "K" name plate at the top, while "MIB: Men In Black" proudly proclaims the license. Behind all this, and adding some depth to the design, is an embossed locker grill. The sides of the packaging feature "MIB3" repeated over and over again in a nice reflective metallic font. I'm forever thankful Enterbay didn't use this side art - the same nausea-inducing optical art used on the teaser movie posters - on the front panel. I'd have a headache before I even opened the box. The back of the box is rather Plain Jane, featuring the movie logo and a bunch of legal mumbo jumbo, most if it in Chinese.

Speaking of which, opening the packaging is a snap: simply swing the magnetically shut outer flap back. The box then splits in half; one side containing all the figure's accessories, the other protectively storing the actual figure in a bed of form-fitting foam. I should note that the gear is also well protected; the storage tray comes covered in a resealable cling wrap-like plastic. It's something I haven't seen before, standard tape or twist ties usually being the storage method of choice.

Slick packaging aside, the thing that is really going to blow collectors away is the head sculpts on these two figures. The life-like portraits of Agent's J and K are, in my humble opinion, some of the finest realistic sculpts I've seen, and I do own my fair share of high-end 1:6th scale action figures. Will Smith's head in particular is dead-on accurate, the sense of realism bordering on creepy. I mean that in a good way, but yeah, it's kind of unnerving playing around with a collectible so real.

Tommy Lee Jones' head sculpt is equally good, although it appears to me slightly more like a caricature of Tommy Lee. I'm not quite sure what it is about his sculpt, but it's not negative... you instantly know who this is, no doubt about it. It's not like some sculpts where you look at it and sort of see the person it is suppose to be. This is Tommy Lee Jones 100%, well, with the caricature aspect of it, more like 105%. Regardless, both head sculpts are damn good, Enterbay sculptor's SCUDERIA (on Will Smith) and GALLARDO (Tommy Lee) both talents to be reckoned with. I can't wait to see what these two artists sculpt next.

That said, it's almost a shame to place their iconic sunglasses on. But boy do they look sharp with those shades on.

On the subject of accessories, each figure includes a substantial amount. Agent J includes a standard issue neuralyzer in both active and deactivated modes, previously mentioned sunglasses that slide right onto the figure's head, the time jump device seen in MIB3 and the alien orb, four pairs of interchangeable hands and what could almost be considered a third character: Frank the Pug (complete with stogie and removable shades).

I'm not a huge fan of Frank, but his addition here should please some. I personally would have rather seen the "Worm Guys" thrown in, their comedy relief more to my liking. Another small complaint is that Frank the Pug's shades don't attach very well. Like Agent K's shades, they feature arms that are cut in half so that they appear to be going behind his ears. Unfortunately, there are no slots on Frank's head to place these cut arms in, so they just sort of rest there unsecured and prone to falling off if bumped.

Agent K gets his shades as well, though the arms, as mentioned, are cut in half. Like Frank, this allows them to appear as if they are resting under his hair. It really scared me at first... I thought they were broken. K also receives four pairs of interchangeable hands and a full arsenal of weapons including a Shark Gun (large trumpet-like rifle), a 2012 Standard Issue (pistol), a shotgun and an itty bitty Noisy Cricket (It's sooo cute!). Because I received the set of two figures, my Agent K included a plastic baggy packing an extra 2012 Standard Issue and shotgun, I am assuming so you can equip Agent J... or arm Agent K John Woo style! The weapons are all very nice sculpts and the "chrome" lends them a shiny real metal vibe. However, the plastic construction on the guns feels a little light weight and "toy like". A minor criticism, as they do look great once in the figure's hands, though I do wish they were cast of a better material (Real metal? One can dream, right?).

Lastly, each figure receives Enterbay's FS-201 figure stand. This is my first experience with the unusual display stand and I'm not quite sold on its design. Unlike the newer crotch-clutching stands from Hot Toys, Enterbay's stand uses a waist clamp system. It works well enough, but it's a bit finicky trying to get it positioned underneath the figure's close fitting suit jackets. In other words: distracting if clamped on the outside. The rest of the stand I do like a lot, the base opens up to double the display space the figure stands on. Construction is also nice, the adjustable rod and vice clamps being cast in metal. The folding base itself is plastic.

Another critical element for Enterbay to get right on these figures was their trademark black suits. They aren't called the Men In Black for nothing. To get the job done right, Enterbay enlisted the design work of famous Korean figurine tailor ADDBLUE (Like the Men In Black, Enterbay's staff loves their mysterious aliases!). Agent's J and K come dressed in a black suit (jacket, trousers and white shirt), a black belt with buckle, a black tie, a pair of socks and a pair of black faux-leather shoes. To this collector, their clothing fits perfectly; the jackets very form fitting and snug. Almost too snug, as posing the figures can be a bit restricted due to their tight outfits.

This brings me to a problem I encountered while posing my Agent K's right arm: It popped out of socket at the elbow. The elbow joints are rather tight on these figures and I was having a devil of a time trying to bend Agent K's right arm without breaking it. Instead it dislocated. Luckily it is a peg system and the arm can be reattached. Unfortunately, I couldn't see how it reattached, Agent K's shirt (Agent J's as well) being sewn so close to the underlying body that there is no way to remove it without tearing the stitching. Fumbling around blindly I finally got K back together and was able to pin point his elbow joint for a correct bend. Pain in the butt? You bet and something I do hope Enterbay addresses in the second batch of figures. Other than that, the articulation on my figures is great: their heads have a great range of movement and my leg joints were nice and firm allowing the figures to stand without their display base (though I recommend the base for prolonged display - just to be safe). For the record, Enterbay is using the newly developed RM-6 body for their Men In Black figures. I'm not a 1:6th scale body expert, but aside from Agent K's right arm fiasco, the body works fine for me.

In closing, Enterbay's Men In Black 3 action figures do extreme justice to the popular sci-fi franchise. These 1:6th scale reproductions of Agent's J and K are simply the best collectibles of the duo on the market. Not that there is a whole lot of Men In Black merchandise, but that's what makes these two figures even more appealing. Everything Enterbay releases, they pour their heart into, from Bruce Lee and Tony Montana, to these new Men In Black figures. From their sophisticated packaging, insanely realistic head sculpts, finely tailored outfits and wealth of accessories, Enterbay's Men In Black figures exhibit Enterbay's "Passion For Perfection". Are there some things that could be a little better? Sure, but no product is perfect.

That said, are these worth $225 each? While there is no doubt that the price of high-end one-sixth scale collectibles has risen over the years, $225 per figure is pushing it. At $376 for the pair (about $188 each), things come down to Earth, or at least the realistic pricing realm of 12-inch collectibles these days. While the overall package for these collectibles is top notch, ultimately fans are purchasing these figures for their eerily life-like head sculpts, iconic outfits and accessories. For Will Smith in a suit, $150 would be more to my liking. However, beggars can't be choosers and for those wanting the best (and only) 1:6th scale Men In Black figures money can buy, Enterbay is where it's at. Enterbay's Men In Black 3 figures are an investment that may not save your wallet, but they'll sure make your collection out of this world.

Is Weboolu the virtual console of the future? | Gamezebo

Imagine a games console of the future where you don?t have to buy a piece of hardware and connect it to your TV. ?Instead, your browser is the console and your smart phone is your controller. This is the vision of Weboolu, a new gaming start-up based in Israel aiming to create the next generation console with the casual gamer in mind.

According to Itay Gur and Gur Zeevi, founders of Weboolu, casual gamers want games which they can play with their friends, the experience should be laid-back, and the games should be always available, no matter the device you have.

Their solution is an HTML5 app that users can download on their phone and easily sync with any device, including computers smart TV?s, or other mobile devices. ?Basically, anywhere you can run a HTML5-enabled browser, you can play games on Weboolu.?

newsGame developers are provided an API to plug their games into the platform and design a control scheme for their particular game. ?This is a key feature, because the consensus in the games industry is that the iPhone (or Android phones) by themselves make for bad game controllers due to their form factors. ?This is a reason Apple has yet made the leap to releasing an AppleTV device that competes with game consoles, as many have suggested to me.

I was a skeptic, but the game controller schemes Weboolu showed me during their demo (a card game, a puzzler, and a music/Guitar Hero-style game) were intuitive and easy to play with. ?Weboolu has actually turned a smartphone into a game controller -- something the user interface experts at Apple have yet to successfully do (kudos to them). ?

newsWeboolu also offers a social game platform with user profiles, matchmaking and leaderboards, as well as a marketplace to sell and purchase virtual items. ?And, the platform works with games created in Flash, Unity, as well as HTML5.

Weboolu?s plan to take over the gaming world is to convince game developers to integrate their games in the platform, and convince electronic manufacturers to integrate the Weboolu platform into their PC?s, TV?s and set-top boxes.

If this sounds like a huge challenge for a company of six to pull off, you?re right. ?This is a classic chicken and egg problem, where you need the game developers on board to convince the Sony?s and Samsung?s of the world to integrate the platform in their TV?s, and vice versa.

news

A bigger challenge, however, would be to actually create the hardware itself. ?This is the plan of OUYA, which aims to create and sell a hackable Android-based games console for $99. ??Here at Gamezebo, we?ve been very excited about OUYA?and the gaming community agrees, helping Ouya raise more than $7 million on Kickstarter!

And yet, call me still a bit of a skeptic. ?I love the idea of OUYA, but I have no clue how in the world they plan to manufacture and sell a games console by next year for only $99. ??If Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony have to sell their consoles at a loss, how will OUYA sell profitably at $99??

But, I digress. ?My point is, Weboolu has huge challenge bringing its virtual console of the future to the masses. ?But its strategy of making the entire platform virtual, HTML5-based, and playable on devices you already own is brilliant. ?It?s far easier to partner with device-makers than make one yourself. ?OUYA may sound sexier, but Weboolu may end up on top.
I asked Itay Gur and Gur Zeevi about OUYA. ?Their response, naturally, was that they viewed OUYA as yet another hardware maker to possibly partner with.

Weboolu is currently testing in beta and should be available to the public by September 2012.

Postby Shan? on Thu Aug 09, 2012 12:39 am

Here is where you can create your NPC characters so we can all enjoy using them to thicken the plot :) Again no comments/questions here, but can be posted on the original OOC topic. When posting here, note that anyone has permission to use these characters unless you make a note saying you just want to roleplay them. Try to stay as best you can in the character of each NPC, but because we can't see everyone's thoughts on them, don't get upset if someone roleplays them differently to how you would...this will be part of the fun :)
Also, when posting from an NPC, I will not be expecting the usual 600 words as for the main characters. This can be as long or as little as you like (that is needed to do what you want it to) and can be added to the bottom of a main character post with the title: NPC- (Name of NPC)

Basic Skelly:

Name:
Age:
Occupation: (This is whatever they are doing whether it be a store owner, a priest, or soldier)
Description: (This doesn't have to be much if you don't want it. A single picture should do )
Role: (What you hope to achieve by creating this NPC character. e.g some Drama, moving the plot along, moving characters, adding conflict etc.)
Main Interaction: (This will be the main characters they will most likely interact with. This is important if they are mainly temporary characters.)
Personality: (Again this can be brief, or as detailed as you like.)

Patterns in adolescent brains could predict heavy alcohol use

ScienceDaily (Aug. 8, 2012) ? Heavy drinking is known to affect an adolescents' developing brain, but certain patterns of brain activity may also help predict which teens are at risk of becoming problem drinkers, according to a study by researchers in the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and VA San Diego Healthcare System. Their results will be published in the September issue of the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, online August 8.

This study focused on 12 to 16-year-olds whose brains were scanned using special functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) prior to the onset of drinking, and then again three years later. About half of this group transitioned into heavy drinking over the 3-year period. However, when imaged before they began drinking, this cohort already showed less fMRI response in regions of the brain previously linked to heavy drinking.

"Interestingly, this study showed that teens who initially showed less activation in certain brain areas were at greater risk for becoming heavy drinkers over the next three years," said principal investigator Susan Tapert, PhD, professor of psychiatry at UC San Diego School of Medicine and VA San Diego Healthcare System.

Over time, adolescents who initiated heavy drinking exhibited less efficient processing of information.

"That's the opposite of what you'd expect, because their brains should be getting more efficient as they get older," said lead researcher Lindsay M. Squeglia, PhD of UC San Diego Department of Psychiatry.

Once this group began drinking heavily -- defined by episodes of consuming four or more drinks on an occasion for females, and five or more drinks for males -- their brains already started showing the patterns previously seen in heavy drinkers: more activity in certain areas of the brain as they tried to perform a memory test. These brain areas included the parietal lobe (which helps process spatial information), and frontal lobe (the portion of the brain involved in, among other things, short-term memory tasks, planning, and organization).

"At the point these teens began drinking heavily, the fMRI data revealed greater parietal and frontal activity during a spatial working memory task in heavy drinkers versus light drinkers, despite equivalent performance on the tasks and after considering their brain activation patterns before drinking started," said Squeglia.

The study's findings add to evidence that heavy episodic drinking during adolescence may be followed by subtle alterations in brain functioning. But the research also points to neural response patterns that could indicate a risk factor for future substance use.

"Our results suggest there could be a pre-existing vulnerability, and could provide clues to the biological origins of problem drinking," said Squeglia.

Additional contributors to the study include Reagan R. Wetherill, PhD, UC San Diego; and Carmen Pulido, PhD, Joanna Jacobus, PhD, and Gregory G. Brown, PhD, UC San Diego and VA San Diego Healthcare.

The study was funded by grants from the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, part of the National Institutes of Health (#F31 AA18940, R21 AA019748 and R01 AA13419).
