Republicans seek chance to unseat House Democrat in Georgia

ATLANTA (Reuters) - Four Georgia Republicans vie on Tuesday for the chance to challenge U.S. Representative John Barrow, the last white Democrat in Congress from the Deep South, in the general election this fall.

Barrow, who has served in the House of Representatives since 2005, has no opposition in Tuesday's primary. But he will likely face a tough re-election battle in November after Georgia's Republican-led legislature increased the number of Republican voters in the state's eastern 12th congressional district.

"He was dealt a much more Republican district, 10 points more Republican than the district he had," said Charles Bullock, a political science professor at the University of Georgia.

Georgia's congressional districts were re-arranged when the state gained one House seat due to its rapid growth reflected in the 2010 Census.

Barrow is an anomaly these days in Congress. White Democratic congressmen have been vanishing from the political landscape in U.S. southern states as conservative white voters increasingly switch their allegiance to the Republican party, Bullock said.

"He will fight to hold onto the seat," Bullock said. "He will raise a ton of money, but it's an uphill fight."

The Republican candidates aiming to defeat Barrow in November are state Representative Lee Anderson, attorneys Wright McLeod and Maria Sheffield, and businessman Rick Allen.

Voters also will consider candidates in the state's new 9th congressional district gained after the 2010 Census.

The north Georgia district is heavily Republican, and the winner of the Republican primary on Tuesday is expected to become the state's newest member of Congress, Bullock said.

Martha Zoller, a radio talk show host, and Doug Collins, a state representative, are considered the front runners in the Republican contest in the new district.

Zoller has the endorsement of former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin and former U.S. House Speaker and presidential candidate Newt Gingrich. Collins has been endorsed by former Georgia governor Zell Miller.

Voters in metro Atlanta will consider a new tax that would fund $7.2 billion in transportation improvements for the gridlocked region.

The proposed penny-on-the-dollar transportation sales tax in the 10-county metro Atlanta region would pay for road and mass transit projects. The tax has gained high-profile endorsements from Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, Governor Nathan Deal and CNN founder Ted Turner.

But polls show the proposed tax trailing in voter support. It has drawn opposition from some African American leaders, including John Evans, the NAACP president in DeKalb County, which is one of the most populated counties in the region.

Even wider blackouts sweep India for second day

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Grid failure hit India for a second day on Tuesday, cutting power to hundreds of millions of people in the populous northern and eastern states including the capital Delhi and major cities such as Kolkata.

The government said the northern, eastern and northeastern grids were hit, wider than Monday's blackouts.

Delhi's metro system ground to a halt and office buildings ran on backup generators a day after a 12-hour blackout caused commuter chaos in the bustling capital, underscoring overstretched infrastructure that has weighed heavily on India's economy.

"The northern grid has failed again," Arvinder Singh Bakshi, the chairman of the Central Electricity Authority, told Reuters.

The northern grid alone covers more than 300 million people from the mountains of Himachal Pradesh to the Ganges plains in Uttar Pradesh, which has a larger population than Brazil.

TV stations said the eastern grid was also affected and a Reuters reporter said some areas of the former capital Kolkata in the east of the country were without power.

(AP) ? A California man faces federal drug charges for allegedly trying to smuggle more than 4 pounds of methamphetamine to Japan in what looked like dozens of Snickers bars.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said Monday that 34-year-old Rogelio Mauricio Harris of Long Beach was arrested last week at Los Angeles International Airport as he prepared to board a flight to Japan.

Harris was charged in Los Angeles with drug possession and faces at least 10 years in prison if convicted.

Federal agents conducting routine baggage inspections found 45 full-sized Snickers bars inside Harris' luggage. Each bar was coated in a chocolate-like substance to make it look like a candy bar, but tests revealed the so-called candy contained methamphetamine.

Authorities estimate the 4 pounds of meth is worth about $250,000.

Living, and Life, on Route 66: Thanks for the warning

Sometimes you have to wonder if the people who place the traffic signs are smoking something funny while they work...or if some of them just have a weird sense of humor. Early last fall, Ben and I were in Parker, AZ checking out the area to decide if we might want to try camping there sometime. I forget what road we were on, but there was an area for off-road/ATV's - sand hills, trails, etc. There were signs all around the area warning automotive traffic that there were off-road vehicles in the area. However, we saw one sign that we weren't sure who it was meant for. At the bottom of a hill, along the highway, there was a fence

...and this sign.........................

less than 6 inches in front of the fence........

A little late to warn an errant driver (auto or atv), don't you think??

Until next time, B

Phelps, Park, Biedermann among swim surprises

(AP) ? Michael Phelps barely qualified in the 400-meter individual medley on the opening day of Olympic swimming Saturday, squeaking into the final by seven-hundredths of a second.

"That one didn't feel too good," he said.

Phelps wasn't the only surprise of the morning at the Aquatics Centre, where Queen Elizabeth appeared briefly.

Olympic champion Park Tae-hwan of South Korea won his 400 freestyle heat, but was disqualified for a false start. Paul Biedermann of Germany, the world record holder in the event, failed to make the final.

"That's the Olympics," said Canadian Ryan Cochrane, who barely made the 400 free final. "It's always a surprise, every single heat. You just have to focus on your own race."

Phelps, the two-time defending Olympic champion, won his 400 IM preliminary heat in 4 minutes, 13.33 seconds with a time that was well off his world record of 4:03.84 set four years ago in Beijing, when Phelps won a record eight gold medals.

But it was only good enough to secure the last spot in the evening final, when Phelps will swim in Lane 8 instead of the middle of the pool.

"The only thing that matters is just getting a spot in," he said. "You can't win the gold medal from the morning."

In the 400 IM, Kosuke Hagino of Japan led the way in 4:10.01, a national record. Chad le Clos of South Africa was second at 4:12.24, and Ryan Lochte of the United States advanced in third at 4:12.35.

Phelps' time was just fast enough to keep Laszlo Cseh of Hungary, the silver medalist in Beijing, out of the final. Cseh was ninth overall after leading Phelps during their heat before the American closed on the last lap of freestyle to beat him to the wall.

"I didn't expect those guys to go that fast in their heat," Phelps said. "I was slower this morning than I was four years ago."

Phelps' time in the grueling event that he had vowed not to swim again after Beijing took some of the luster off what was expected to be a showdown between him and Lochte for gold.

"You can't count him out," Lochte said of Phelps. "Even though he just squeaked in eighth, he's a racer. We're going to do everything we can to go 1-2 tonight."

Lochte, the bronze medalist in Beijing, has won the 400 IM at the last two world championships.

"My first race is always the worst one," he said. "I'm glad I got the cobwebs out."

Dana Vollmer had the fastest qualifying time in the 100 butterfly at 56.25 seconds, setting American and Olympic records, to lead 16 women into the evening semifinals.

"I'm really happy with how fast it was and I think it's only going to get faster," she said. "That's kind of a confidence-booster. I'm ready to go."

Lu Ying of China was second in 57.17 and Australian Alicia Coutts was third at 57.36. Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden, the world record holder, was fourth at 57.45.

American Claire Donahue moved on in seventh, while British teammates Francesca Hall and Ellen Gandy were eighth and ninth.

Jess Schipper of Australia, the bronze medalist four years ago, was 24th and missed the semifinals by eight spots.

In the 400 free, Sun Yang of China qualified fastest in 3:45.07. American Peter Vanderkaay was second at 3:45.80, followed by his teammates Conor Dwyer in 3:46.24.

Park was surprised by his DQ, saying, "I don't know why" after he walked off the deck. In Beijing, he became South Korea's first swimming gold medalist and then won the world title in Shanghai last year.

Biedermann washed out for the second straight Olympics. He didn't make it out of the heats in Beijing. He set the world record at the 2009 world meet in Rome at the height of the high-tech body suit craze. Those suits have since been banned.

Syrian forces pound Aleppo and Damascus

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Damascus and Syria's second biggest city, Aleppo, came under shell fire from government forces battling a growing insurgency against President Bashar al-Assad on Thursday, opposition activists in the area said.

Residents in southern Damascus reported a shell landing in southern areas of the capital every minute.

After a major assault on rebels in Damascus last week, the army has turned to Aleppo, reinforcing troops there with an armored column that had been operating in a northern province.

Fierce clashes raged in the early hours in Aleppo, and an activist said rebels now controlled half of Syria's commercial capital, a claim that could not be independently verified.

"There was shelling this morning on the Salaheddine and Mashhad districts," said Aleppo activist Abu Hisham. "Now it stopped, but helicopters are buzzing overhead."

Activists said 24 people were killed in fighting in and around Aleppo on Wednesday, swelling a national death toll of about 18,000 since the revolt against Assad began 16 months ago.

In the Syrian capital, a resident in the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp reported heavy shelling, particularly near the southern Hajar al-Aswad district.

She said the army seemed to be targeting sites on the edges of the camp, firing shells every minute. The bombardment started around 7 a.m. (0400 GMT) and was still going three hours later.

As hostilities have intensified in the north, in and around Aleppo, Turkey closed its border posts to commercial traffic on Wednesday, but not to refugees fleeing Syria.

    BATTLE FOR THE CITIES

The revolt against Assad has developed from an insurgency in the provinces into a battle for control of the two main cities, Aleppo and Damascus, where fighting exploded last week.

Assad's forces have launched big counter-assaults in both cities. They appear to have beaten rebels back from neighborhoods in the capital and are attacking Aleppo.

At the Syrian town of Azaz, a few miles south of the Turkish border, rebels appeared in control after heavy clashes over the past month in which they succeeded in driving government forces out of what had become a rubble-strewn ghost town.

The conflict has left Azaz in ruins, a Reuters correspondent who visited the town said. Burnt-out armored personnel carriers sat on the roads where rebels had hit them with rocket-propelled grenades. Bullet casings were scattered everywhere.

Most residents fled during the latest fighting, which pushed Assad's forces out over the past month and ended in the rebels taking the Bab al-Salam border crossing with Turkey on Sunday.

The struggle for Aleppo could prompt an exodus across the Turkish border, where some Syrian refugees are already complaining about poor conditions in camps and have clashed with riot police in disputes over food and other issues this week.

"There is not enough food. They have broken our hearts, the Turks. Why are they doing this to us?" said a sobbing woman called Umm Omar, with her four children huddled next to her in a camp near the border.

In its most recent comment on the fighting, state-run Syrian television said on Wednesday that government troops were imposing security and stability in and around Aleppo.

"The terrorists are suffering terrible losses. Groups of them are throwing their weapons away and giving themselves up. Others are fleeing for the Turkish border," the television said.

Military experts believe an overstretched Syrian army is pulling back to concentrate on fighting insurgents in Aleppo and Damascus, important power centers for the government, while leaving outlying areas in the hands of rebels.

The uprising has entered a more violent phase in the past 10 days since rebels poured into Damascus in large numbers.

On July 18, an explosion killed four members of Assad's inner circle inside a security headquarters, a blow that wiped out much of the top echelon of his military command structure and shattered the reputation for invulnerability that his family has held since his father seized power in a coup in 1970.

    WESTERN POWERS

Western powers have been calling for Assad to be removed from office for months, but they fear that he will fight to the end, raising the risk of sectarian warfare spreading across one of the world's most volatile regions.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, addressing the Bosnian parliament in Sarajevo, said the world must unite to end the "slaughter" in Syria, recalling the inertia of the United Nations in 1995 during the Srebrenica massacre in Bosnia.

At the U.N. Security Council, members blamed each other for rising violence in Syria. Western states pledged to seek an end to the conflict outside the world body, while Russia warned of "likely catastrophic consequences" with that approach.

Russia, an ally of Syria, and China have repeatedly blocked Western-backed Security Council resolutions on Syria.

As the revolt against Assad intensifies, more Syrian officials have abandoned their posts. Syria's ambassador to the United Arab Emirates and his wife, who is Damascus's envoy to Cyprus, defected on Wednesday.

A military attach? at the Syrian embassy in Oman told Al Jazeera television he had also defected. "After the killing and bombardment and destruction of our people in Syria increased, and the massacres took place, this ... pushed me to defect from this regime," Mohammad Tahseen al-Faqir said.

'Sister Wives' family challenges Utah bigamy law

(AP) ? Kody Brown and his four wives want what any family wants, to live in the privacy of their own home free from government intrusion, and out from under the threat of criminal prosecution for ? as they see it ? just loving each other.

The polygamous family, stars of the TLC show "Sister Wives," has sued Utah and the county they fled from, hoping to persuade a federal judge to overturn the state's bigamy law as unconstitutional.

The case could potentially decriminalize a way of life for tens of thousands of self-described Mormon fundamentalists, most of whom live in Utah where bigamy is a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

The state, meanwhile, has publicly said it won't prosecute consenting adult polygamists unless there are other crimes involved, but insists the law doesn't overreach.

"It is not protected under religious freedom because states have the right to regulate marriage," said Paul Murphy, spokesman for Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff.

A hearing was set for Wednesday on a motion to dismiss the case after prosecutors in Utah County, where the family had been living until last year, announced no criminal charges would be filed against the Browns under the state's bigamy statute.

The move came after Shurtleff assured the Browns they wouldn't be prosecuted by the state under his policy that consenting adult polygamists won't be charged as long as they're not committing other crimes.

U.S. District Judge Clark Waddoups then dismissed Shurtleff and Gov. Gary Herbert from the lawsuit, but allowed it to continue against the county since, at the time, prosecutors there hadn't officially adopted the same policy. That changed in May when Utah County Attorney Jeff Buhman announced the closing of his criminal investigation into the Brown's lifestyle, simultaneously adopting the state policy.

Buhman, who didn't return a call from The Associated Press, is seeking to have the lawsuit dismissed outright. He claims the Browns have no standing since they are no longer subject to prosecution.

No matter, claims their attorney, Washington, D.C., constitutional law professor Jonathan Turley.

Brown and his wives ? Meri, Janelle, Christine and Robyn ? remain victims and continue to live under the stigma of being considered felons, Turley said, noting they fled to Nevada last year.

It's no longer just about being prosecuted, Turley argued.

"The underlying statute is facially unconstitutional," he said.

Turley argues that under previous U.S. Supreme Court rulings, such as one that struck down Texas' sodomy law, private intimate relationships between consenting adults are constitutionally protected.

While all states outlaw bigamy, some like Utah have laws that not only prohibit citizens from having more than one marriage license, but also make it illegal to even purport to be married to multiple partners. Utah's bigamy statute even bans unmarried adults from living together and having a sexual relationship.

The latter provision could include same-sex couples, unmarried heterosexual couples and those, like the Browns, who don't have multiple licenses but live in a marriage-like relationship.

Their lawsuit doesn't aim to challenge Utah's right to refuse recognition of multiple licenses, nor are the Browns seeking them, Turley said. They just want to be left alone, he added, and not labeled felons.

In fact, Utah's statehood was granted in the 1890s under the condition that plural marriage ? which was then openly practiced by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ? would be banned in the state constitution.

The practice has been illegal under federal law in the U.S. since the 1860s. In 1887 and 1890, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected legal challenges of the ban that argued that First Amendment protections should guarantee the right to continue the practice.

The Browns are members of the Apostolic United Brethren and say they practice polygamy as part of their religious beliefs.

And like most polygamists, Brown only has a valid marriage license with his first wife, Meri. He married the other three in religious ceremonies. They consider themselves "spiritually married."

Fewer than a dozen Utah cases have challenged the law ? none successfully. It has most commonly been used to prosecute polygamists typically when the defendants were also charged with other crimes, like child abuse. The criminal investigation into Warren Jeffs, for instance, and his polygamous Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints group, began as a probe into child sex abuse allegations.

He is now serving a life sentence in Texas after convictions on child sex and bigamy charges.

Some experts liken the issue to gay marriage or sodomy bans, but note neither carries the historical stigma that comes with polygamy.

"In many ways, the movement for the rights of polygamists has just not advanced enough to the point where the claim is going to seem legitimate to the courts," said Stanford University constitutional law expert Jane Schacter.

She noted there is "much more acceptance of gay couples, of homosexuality in general."

Polygamy "opens up a whole can of legal worms that is not really opened with the same sex marriage issue," Schacter said, noting polygamy throughout history has been associated with underage marriages and child sex abuse.

Regardless of whether there are polygamous relationships among consenting adults where no other crimes are occurring, the historical stigma persists, she said.

"It's not an issue I think will be laughed out of court, but I don't think it is poised for a victory at this point," Schacter added. "Contemporary law under the First Amendment regarding the exercise of religion is just not very friendly to the claims of polygamists."

The Parenting Place offers wealth of helpful services to community ...

COUNTY ? Ben Franklin is credited with coining the phrase ?an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.? Gloria Morris, director of The Parenting Place, home of Prevent Child Abuse Pickens County, would agree whole-heartedly.
Every day we try to prevent illness by consistently washing our hands throughout the day; we prevent major automotive problems by performing routine oil changes and fluid maintenance in our cars; we prevent damage to our financial and credit history by predictably paying our bills on time each month.
Prevent Child Abuse Pickens County (PCAPC) is a non-profit organization that has been serving Pickens County since 1991. Affiliated with The Children?s Trust, Prevent Child Abuse South Carolina and Prevent Child Abuse America, the programs at PCAPC stress prevention as the primary key to ending child abuse.
According to Morris, in the state of South Carolina, Pickens County ranks as the third highest county for cases of child neglect and abuse related to poverty.
?Abuse prevention is possible, and it is simple, but people have to be taught parenting skills,? said Morris. ?As a community, we have to care about people and treat them with respect. It is that simple.?
Research shows that prevention programs (specifically home visitation) are successful in promoting positive parenting practices, ensuring school readiness, improving family health, and increasing self-sufficiency. By meeting these needs, the Parenting Place is working toward reducing the likelihood of child abuse and neglect.
Prevention is key. PCAPC takes a holistic approach to child neglect and abuse prevention by focusing on families of every context, and through community outreach programs to ensure that everyone understands their role in the protection of children.
Anyone can attend Family Life Skills classes through the Parenting Place. These classes are designed to address the multitude of issues and stress families cope with on a daily basis: financial stability, responsibility, job skills, education, conflict resolution, discipline, empathetic parenting and so on.
Parenting does not come with a How-To manual. Most people parent based on the experiences they had as children. They practice what they know and what they have experienced. If they were beat with belts as children, and they have never learned alternative forms of discipline or punishment, how would they be expected to behave differently as parents?
?We like to get involved with parents in the prenatal stages and help them for as long as they need us,? said Morris. ?We stress the importance of meeting children?s most basic of needs when they are infants. For instance, when a baby cries, that baby needs to know that someone is going to respond to his or her needs.
?Without that sense of safety and security, we learn to be fearful. When we operate in fear, we do not function the way we should and we do not develop to our full potential,? said Morris. ?We try to teach people to be present in their role as parents.?
Family Life Skills is a 12-hour program (a total of six two-hour meetings) geared toward parents, foster parents, relatives and others who care for children. They teach parenting techniques that help reduce the stress of parenting.
The CODES Program (Creating Opportunities to Develop Economic Success) teaches parents how to develop a plan of financial security for their families. In partnership with Tri-County, this program encourages education so that parents can secure jobs that will offer a living wage as opposed to struggling week-to-week.
?We offer practical skills that teach people how to look for a job, interview for a job and then maintain a job,? said Morris. ?These are skills that not everyone has.?
Morris? agency is also hands-on with families in the provision of at-home visitation with families. Again, not everyone in the Pickens County community has access to transportation, so PCAPC brings the programs to them.
?Being able to visit with families in their homes offers them a level of caring, of dignity and compassion,? said Morris, ?that might be lacking in their lives.?
At the very core, says Morris, people, especially teen moms and women who have been involved in domestic violence situations, need to feel a sense of worth and competence; they need to believe in themselves and their abilities.
?There are so many people with broken spirits,? said Morris. ?We need to respect each and every person ? to show them compassion and to have empathy for their situations and circumstances.?
WINGS (Women in Need of Guidance & Support) Visitation Services, a free program for women who are survivors of child abuse or domestic violence, has been serving women and children in Pickens County for the past 17 years. PCAPC staff works with women to help them overcome obstacles and raise their children in a healthier, loving environment.
The Parenting Place and Prevent Child Abuse Pickens County offers incredible programs and services in the Pickens County community. Doing so requires the generosity of the community. In addition to their programming, PCAPC also helps children and families in need through donations of clothing, food and other household needs.
?We help with diapers, wipes, formula, cleaning products, food, clothing, lamps, birthday presents,? said Morris. ?What we cannot use, we pass along to partner agencies ? like the United Way, for example ? who can utilize what we can?t.?
With school starting in the next few weeks, PCAPC is greatly in need of clothing for children from infants to 6-7 years in age, as well as a variety of school supplies.
Items like non-perishable food, infant formula, diapers and wipes are always in high demand. These are expensive items that people in the community need but cannot always afford. Not being able to afford to meet the basic needs of children adds a great deal of stress to parents.
For more information on the programs and services at The Parenting Place, to volunteer time or donations of any kind, call (864) 898-5583 or send an e-mail to director@theparentingplacepca.org. Donations can also be delivered to their physical address at 1899 Gentry Memorial Highway between Easley and Pickens.

'Downton Abbey' stars hint at what's to come

By Susan C. Young, TODAY.com contributor

    Carnival / PBS

The stars of "Downton Abbey" deliver hints of what's to come in season three of the Masterpiece hit.

Well shut your mouth and pass the crumpets: PBS revealed a spoiler-packed trailer for season three of ?Downton Abbey? at the Television Critics Association summer tour on Saturday.?

The session wrapped with a cheeky Hugh Bonneville, the man behind patriarch Robert Crawley, doing a mock strip tease that revealed a T-shirt proclaiming ?Free Bates!?

Oh, we?re all in for a wicked good time when the Emmy-nominated series returns in early January.

(Spoiler alert! If you don?t want any hints about the season three, stop here.)

The upcoming season is set in the roaring ?20s, and the frocks rock. But there are plenty of rough times ahead for the Crawleys and crew.

Bates may have escaped a death sentence last season, but he and Anna will be fighting for his freedom after he was unjustly found guilty of murder. Brendan Coyle, who plays the beleaguered valet, told TODAY.com he should have cashed in on the merchandizing of the Free Bates shirts, since much of this coming seasons' storyline will be about getting him out.

And there?s trouble to come once again in the rocky romance between Matthew and Michelle Dockery's Lady Mary.

?Did you really think it would go smoothly for them?? a smiling and laughing Dockery said to TODAY.com.

No, indeed.? But will there be a wedding between them?

?Oh, you?ll have to wait and see on that,? she teased. ?But there will be a wedding.?

Love does not run smoothly on ?Downton Abbey.? While a wedding is promised, perhaps it will be glum sister Edith and her older suitor who tie the knot.

But the big ripple on the way is that Downton is once again in dire financial straits after Robert?s bad investments. As the exclusive TCA sneak peek revealed, an undaunted Cora taps into her Yankee roots and says, ?I?m an American. Have gun, will travel.?

But does that mean that the servants are to be dismissed and Lady Mary left to mop the floors?

    Not bloody likely.

?There seems to be no end to Cora?s family money,? Elizabeth McGovern told TODAY.com at the post panel soiree. ?They are noveau riche, and still very riche.?

Cora?s fortune bought her family?s way into royalty, and that might be lost. But her parents are still minting money back in the good ol? USA, and they aren?t about to lose their purchased stature.

Cora?s mom, played by Shirley MacLaine, has arrived on the British shores, ready to take on Violet (Maggie Smith). MacLaine is only in two episodes, although the door is open for her to return for subsequent seasons.

Also, it seems the rumor about Smith?s departure from the series after the next season has been greatly exaggerated.

?Oh, that?s just Maggie,? said producer Julian Fellowes of the star not yet signed on past the third season. ?I?m sure she?ll be back.?

If not, MacLaine could be tapped for the resident saucy elder -- if only the producers can figure out a way to get her beloved 12-year-old rat terrier, Terry, through the usual transatlantic quarantine quicker.

?I can?t be away from Terry that long,? MacLaine told TODAY.com. ?He?s old and I don?t like leaving him for that long. But if we could work that out, I don?t mind doing more.?

Fans still have a long wait ahead of them before they learn what else "Downton Abbey" has in store. The Masterpiece series is set to return to PBS in January of 2013.

What plot points and twists are you most looking forward in the third season of "Downton Abbey"? Tell us on our Facebook page.

New method for associating genetic variation with crop traits

ScienceDaily (July 22, 2012) ? A new technique will allow plant breeders to introduce valuable crop traits even without access to the full genome sequence of that crop. The technique, published in the journal Nature Biotechnology, links important agronomic traits in crop plants with active regions of the genome. Instead of requiring knowledge of the crop's complete genome, it identifies only expressed genes.

"For many crop plants, markers are still lacking because of the complexity of some plants' genomes and the very high costs involved," said Professor Ian Bancroft, who led the study at the John Innes Centre. "We have succeeded in developing markers based on the sequences of expressed genes, widening the possibilities for accelerated breeding through marker assisted selection."

Expressed genes are converted from genomic DNA to mRNA. Working with mRNA means that there is no need to generate a complete genome sequence from DNA, making the techniques applicable to a wide range of crops, even those with complex genomes, such as oilseed rape and wheat. It also enables the development of advanced marker resources for less studied crops that are important for developing countries or have specific medicinal or industrial properties.

The research was funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

Peter Werner of plant breeding company KWS UK Ltd and part of the research team said "KWS UK has been delighted to be involved with this ground breaking developmental research. We will be increasingly using this approach to further improve the speed and reliability of our breeding towards the continued improvement of yield and quality of our new varieties produced within the KWS group."

In partnership with the Cambridge-based bioinformatics company Eagle Genomics Ltd, the technology, called TraitTag, is being offered as a service to plant breeders. Markers associated with measured trait variation can be identified in essentially any crop species, including traits controlled at the level of gene expression variation rather than gene sequence variation, such as those with an epigenetic basis.

In an example of such an application, the researchers are now working with plant breeding company Limagrain to produce reliable markers for hybrid performance in oilseed rape. Marker-assisted breeding for this complex trait has previously been unsuccessful due to a lack of available markers and appropriate technology.

Using bioinformatics techniques it is possible to associate variation in both the sequences of expressed genes and their relative abundance in the mRNA with important traits, and then produce markers for these traits that breeders can use in their breeding programmes. Their research was published in the journal Nature Biotechnology and was funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
