Irene sloshes north, leaves 'flooding catastrophe'

As Irene churned over Canada Monday, residents along the battered U.S. East Coast began surveying damage and fretted over the next danger: treacherous flooding.

Downgraded from a hurricane as it lumbered up the coast Sunday, Irene left millions without power across much of the Eastern Seaboard, was blamed for at least 21 deaths and forced airlines to cancel about 12,000 flights .

It never became the big-city nightmare forecasters and public officials had warned about, but it still had the ability to surprise.

And the danger was far from over for many.

Rivers and creeks turned into raging torrents tumbling with tree limbs and parts of buildings in northern New England and upstate New York.

Authorities warned of possibly disastrous flooding in the days ahead, with Vermont's governor saying his state was facing "a full-blown flooding catastrophe."

President Barack Obama, speaking Sunday afternoon from the Rose Garden, urged people to stay vigilant.

"This is not over," Obama said. "Many Americans are still at serious risk of power outages and flooding, which could get worse in the coming days as rivers swell past their banks."

Many of the worst effects arose from rains that fell inland, not the highly anticipated storm surge along the coasts.

Residents of Pennsylvania and New Jersey nervously watched waters rise as hours' worth of rain funneled into rivers and creeks.

Irene was downgraded further to a post-tropical cyclone as it crossed the border with Canada on Sunday night, the danger from rising waters was intensifying for many.

Flooding was under way or forecast along rivers throughout New England after Irene dumped 6 inches to a foot of rain on many of the coastal states, according to a detailed map published by NOAA.

'Very serious'
Hundreds of Vermonters were told to leave their homes after Irene dumped several inches of rain on the landlocked state.

Video posted on Facebook showed a 141-year-old covered bridge in Rockingham swept away by the roiling, muddy Williams River. In another video, an empty car somersaulted down a river in Bennington.

"It's very serious for us at the moment in Vermont," Robert Stirewalt, a spokesman for Vermont Emergency Management Agency, told Reuters. "The top two-thirds of the state are inundated with rapidly rising waters, which we anticipate will be an issue for the next 24 hours."

"It's pretty fierce. I've never seen anything like it," said Michelle Guevin, who spoke from a Brattleboro restaurant after leaving her home in nearby Newfane. She said the fast-moving Rock River was washing out the road to her house.

Green Mountain Power warned that Montpelier, the capital, could be flooded twice: once in the initial storm and again if the utility decides it must release water to save the earthen Marshfield Dam, about 20 miles up the Winooski River to the northeast.

"We don't want to do it. But if the dam were to be compromised, it would be a far greater effect," utility spokeswoman Dorothy Schnure said. Residents of 350 households were asked to leave as a precaution.

Nearly 5 million homes and businesses lost power at some point during the storm. Lights started to come back on for many on Sunday, though it was expected to take days for electricity to be fully restored.

Only about 50,000 power customers in New York City went dark, but people there had something else to worry about: getting to work Monday.

The metropolitan area's transit system, shut down because of weather for the first time in its history, was taking many hours to get back on line.

Limited bus service began Sunday and New York subway service was to be partially restored at 6 a.m. Monday , but riders were warned to expect long lines and long waits.

The commuter rail service to Long Island and New Jersey was being partially restored, but the Metro-North Railroad to Westchester County and Connecticut was suspended because of flooding and mudslides.

Story: 'Gold medal forecast' of Irene's path saved lives, expert says

Airports in New York and around the Northeast were reopening to a backlog of hundreds of thousands of passengers whose flights were canceled over the weekend.

Some of New York's yellow cabs were up to their wheel wells in water, and water rushed over a marina near the New York Mercantile Exchange, where gold and oil are traded. But the New York flooding was not extensive from Irene, whose eye passed over Coney Island and Central Park.

The New York Stock Exchange said it would be open for business on Monday, and the Sept. 11 memorial at the World Trade Center site didn't lose a single tree.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg defended his decision to order 370,000 residents to evacuate their homes in low-lying areas, saying it was impossible to know just how powerful the storm would be.

"We were just unwilling to risk the life of a single New Yorker," he said.

Irene had at one time been a major hurricane, with winds higher than 110 mph as it headed toward the U.S.

It was a tropical storm with 65 mph winds by the time it hit New York. It lost the characteristics of a tropical storm and had slowed to 50 mph by the time it reached Canada.

Damaged roads
Chris Fogarty, director of the Canadian Hurricane Centre, warned of flooding and wind damage in eastern Canada and said the heaviest rainfall was expected in Quebec, where about 250,000 homes were without power.

At least 21 people died in the U.S., most of them when trees crashed through roofs or onto cars. One Vermont woman was swept away and feared drowned in the Deerfield River.

Officials worked to repair hundreds of damaged roads, and power companies picked through uprooted trees and reconnected lines.

One private estimate put damage along the coast at $7 billion, far from any record for a natural disaster.

Twenty homes on Long Island Sound in Connecticut were destroyed by churning surf.

The torrential rain chased hundreds of people in upstate New York from their homes and closed 137 miles of the state's main highway.

Authorities in and around Easton, Pa., kept a close eye on the rising Delaware River. The National Weather Service forecast the river to crest there at 30 feet, well above normal flood stage.

In the South, authorities still were not sure how much damage had been done but expressed relief that it wasn't worse.

"Thank God it weakened a little bit," said Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, who toured a hard-hit Richmond neighborhood where large, old-growth trees uprooted and crushed houses and automobiles.

In Norfolk, Va., where storm surges got within inches of breaking a record, most of the water had receded by Sunday. There was isolated flooding and downed trees, but nowhere near the damage officials predicted.

"We can't believe a hurricane came through here," city spokeswoman Lori Crouch said.

In North Carolina, where six people were killed, the infrastructure losses included the only road to the seven villages on Hatteras Island.

"Overall, the destruction is not as severe as I was worried it might be, but there is still lots and lots of destruction and people's lives are turned upside down," Gov. Beverly Perdue said in Kill Devil Hills.

In an early estimate, consulting firm Kinetic Analysis Corp. figured total losses from the storm at $7 billion, with insured losses of $2 billion to $3 billion.

The storm will take a bite out of Labor Day tourist business from the Outer Banks to the Jersey Shore to Cape Cod.

This year has been one of the most extreme for weather in U.S. history, with $35 billion in losses so far from floods, tornadoes and heat waves.

Irene was the first hurricane to make landfall in the continental United States since 2008, and came almost six years to the day after Katrina ravaged New Orleans on Aug. 29, 2005.

Irene had led to the deaths of at least 21 people in eight states as of Sunday evening:

CONNECTICUT:
? In Prospect, one person was killed in a fire that Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said was apparently caused by wires knocked down by the storm.

FLORIDA:
? In Volusia County, 55-year-old Frederick Fernandez died Saturday off New Smyrna Beach after he was tossed off his board by massive waves caused by Irene. The Orlando Sentinel reports the high school teacher had a large cut on his head, apparently from hitting the sea floor.

? In Flagler County, 55-year-old tourist James Palmer of New Jersey died Saturday in rough surf. Family members say they lost sight of him after he waded into the surf in North Florida. He was pulled to shore and his wife attempted CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

MARYLAND:
? In Queen Anne's County, Md., 85-year-old Anne Bell was killed when a tree knocked a chimney through the glass roof of the sunroom where she and her son were sitting. They'd gone out into the sunroom after the power went out in her Queenstown home. Bell was struck by debris, causing severe trauma.

NEW JERSEY:
? Celena Sylvestri, 20, of Quinton called her boyfriend and then 911 early Sunday seeking help getting out of her flooded car in Pilesgrove, police said. Her body was found eight hours later in the vehicle, which was about 150 feet off the road, police said.

NEW YORK:
? A man in his 50s was electrocuted in Spring Valley when he tried to help a child who had gone into a flooded street with downed wires. The child was in very serious condition at Westchester Medical Center's burn unit, said a spokesman for the Rockland County Emergency Operations Center.

? State police said they recovered the body of a woman who apparently drowned after she fell into Onesquethaw Creek in New Scotland, near Albany.

NORTH CAROLINA:
? In Nash County, a man was killed after a tree limb fell on him outside his home Saturday morning as outer bands from the storm brought near hurricane-force gusts inland.

? Goldsboro police say a 15-year-old girl died Saturday afternoon after the SUV carrying her and family members collided with another SUV at an intersection where Irene had knocked out power to traffic lights. She was one of four family members thrown from the vehicle; the family was returning to northern Virginia from Myrtle Beach, S.C.

? Authorities in Pitt County say a man was found dead in his home after Irene's winds toppled a tree onto his house.

? Another man in Pitt County drove through standing water, went off a road and died after striking a tree on Saturday.

? A mother in Sampson County died Saturday morning when a tree fell on a car carrying her and two family members.

? New Hanover County deputies on Sunday afternoon recovered the body of Melton Robinson Jr., who had been missing since falling or jumping into the Cape Fear River as storms from Irene reached North Carolina on Friday night.

PENNSYLVANIA:
? Michael Scerarko, 44, was killed Sunday when a tree fell on him in his yard. Scerarko, of Stroudsburg, pushed his son out of the way but could not get out of the way himself, police said.

? A 58-year-old Harrisburg man was killed Sunday morning when a tree toppled onto his tent, state police said. The man was one of about 20 people at a party on private property in East Hanover Township, Dauphin County, some of whom who decided to sleep outside.

? A man in a camper was crushed by a tree in northeastern Pennsylvania's Luzerne County, state emergency management officials said. Police found his body shortly before 11 a.m. Sunday.

? A motorist was killed when he lost control of his car on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Carbon County, skidded over an embankment and hit a tree. State officials attributed the accident to the storm.

VIRGINIA:
? Newport News authorities report that 11-year-old Zahir Robinson was killed when a large tree crashed through his apartment shortly after noon.

? In Brunswick County, a tree fell across a car Saturday afternoon, killing 67-year-old James Blackwell of Brodnax. The driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

? Chesterfield County police say a man died at a Hopewell hospital Saturday after a tree fell on a house that he was in.

? A King William County man, 57-year-old William P. Washington, was killed when a tree fell on him as he was cutting another tree on Saturday night. Washington was trying to get home at the height of the storm when a fallen tree blocked his path on a road, about four miles from his home, and he and another motorist tried to clear the way.

American Family Radio Chooses Ka You Communications and ...

IPReady link provides EAS CAP connection, plus remote control over transmitter towers?

AKRON, OH? The American Family Radio, a non-profit organization that owns and operates nearly 200 radio stations across the country, has chosen Ka You Communications and VSAT Systems to help them become EAS CAP compliant. Ka You and VSAT will provide the necessary IP (Internet Protocol) link to 156 of AFR?s transmitter sites.?

The FCC has established a deadline of September 30, 2011 for radio operators to have all of their transmitter sites reliably connected to the Internet and able to receive and relay EAS (Emergency Alert System) messages under the new CAP (Common Alerting Protocol). All EAS CAP messages sent to the IPAWS (Integrated Public Alert and Warning System) database by government agencies will be retrieved via the Internet. The new protocol allows for the sending of voice, video, text, and graphic messages.? The September deadline is in preparation for the national EAS test scheduled for November 9th, 2011.?

The Ka You/VSAT solution, named IPReady, provides an Internet link at even the most remote transmitter locations. Because the connection is satellite-based, it can be established independent of terrestrial lines.?

The IPReady solution includes a static (routable) IP address, reliable Internet connectivity and professional support.? Customers receive a satellite antenna, modem, BUC, and feed assembly. Ka You Communications provides installation services, and VSAT Systems offers 24/7 network monitoring.?

Customers may be able to re-use existing dishes.

Ka You and VSAT Systems say that, most of the time, operators can use the same satellite dish they are already using to receive program content. This eliminates the need for an additional tower lease. However, if a new dish is needed, Ka You satellite specialists can perform the installation, with Ka You and VSAT Systems providing around-the-clock technical support and customer service.?

iDirect satellite platform allows remote control of transmitters.

IPReady utilizes the iDirect satellite platform to link all transmitters to the network. From an iDirect 5IF satellite hub at its Akron, Ohio-based teleport, VSAT Systems is able to provide secure, reliable two-way IP satellite communications to AFR?s transmitter sites. At the remote transmitter site, an iDirect satellite router connects to a remote control unit that enables the AFR to monitor critical transmitter and antenna functions from a central location. In fact, Joey Moody, Chief Engineer of American Family Radio says this is one of the reasons they chose IPReady. ?IPReady does so much more than simply allow us to connect with IPAWS for EAS CAP compliance.? says Moody. ?It also provides easy monitoring of all our transmitters from our headquarters, and that has real value.??

IPReady?s real-time operating system is also designed to protect data from the performance and safety concerns inherent in PC-based solutions.?

Immediate availability.

Operators currently receiving content on AMC-1 can schedule immediate installation. Reservations are also being taken on additional satellite sites that will be brought online in Q3 of 2011. Interested parties may receive more information at www.vsat-systems.com/eas-cap-ipaws or by calling 866-306-1328.

Irene's toll jumps to 38; Vt. towns battle floods

(AP) ? The full measure of Hurricane Irene's fury came into focus Monday as the death toll jumped to 38, New England towns battled epic floods and millions faced the dispiriting prospect of several days without electricity.

From North Carolina to Maine, communities cleaned up and took stock of the uneven and hard-to-predict costs of a storm that spared the nation's biggest city a nightmare scenario, only to deliver a historic wallop to towns well inland.

In New York City, where people had braced for a disaster-movie scene of water swirling around skyscrapers, the subways and buses were up and running again in time for the Monday morning commute. And to the surprise of many New Yorkers, things went pretty smoothly.

But in New England, landlocked Vermont contended with what its governor called the worst flooding in a century. Streams also raged out of control in upstate New York.

In many cases, the moment of maximum danger arrived well after the storm had passed, as rainwater made its way into rivers and streams and turned them into torrents. Irene dumped up to 11 inches of rain on Vermont and more than 13 in parts of New York.

"We were expecting heavy rains," said Bobbi-Jean Jeun of Clarksville, a hamlet near Albany, N.Y. "We were expecting flooding. We weren't expecting devastation. It looks like somebody set a bomb off."

Meanwhile, the 11-state death toll, which had stood at 21 as of Sunday night, rose sharply as bodies were pulled from floodwaters and people were electrocuted by downed power lines.

The tally of Irene's destruction mounted, too. An apparently vacant home exploded in an evacuated, flooded area in Pompton Lakes, N.J., early Monday, and firefighters had to battle the flames from a boat. In the Albany, N.Y., suburb of Guilderland, police rescued two people Monday after their car was swept away. Rescuers found them three hours later, clinging to trees along the swollen creek.

"It's going to take time to recover from a storm of this magnitude," President Barack Obama warned as he promised the government would do everything in its power to help people get back on their feet.

For many people, the aftermath could prove more painful than the storm itself.

In North Carolina, where Irene blew ashore along the Outer Banks on Saturday before heading for New York and New England, 1,000 people were still in emergency shelters, awaiting word on their homes.

At the same time, nearly 5 million homes and businesses in a dozen states were still without electricity, and utilities warned it might be a week or more before some people got their power back.

"Once the refrigerator gets warm, my insulin goes bad. I could go into diabetic shock. It's kind of scary because we don't know how long it's going to be out for," said Patricia Dillon, a partially paralyzed resident of a home for the disabled in Milford, Conn., where the electricity was out and a generator failed. Her voice cracking, she added: "I'm very tired, stressed out, aggravated, scared."

Russ Furlong of Barrington, R.I., ruefully remembered the two weeks he went without power after Hurricane Bob 20 years ago.

"Hopefully, we won't have to wait that long this time," he said. "Last night we had candles. It was romantic. It was fun. But that feeling doesn't last too long."

Up and down the Eastern Seaboard, commuters and vacationers found their travel plans scrambled. Airlines warned it would be days before the thousands of passengers stranded by Irene find their way home. Some Amtrak service in the Northeast was suspended. Commuter trains between New Jersey and New York City were not running. Trains between the city and its northern suburbs were also disrupted.

Kris and Jennifer Sylvester of Brooklyn sat on a bench in the town center in Woodstock, N.Y., with luggage at their feet and their daughters, aged 4 and 9, holding signs reading, "Need a Ride 2 NYC" and "Help Us, No Bus, No Train." They rode Amtrak out for a long weekend in the country, but were unable to get home.

"We're hoping for anything," Jennifer Sylvester said.

In Vermont, the state's emergency management headquarters stood empty, evacuated because of river flooding from Irene's heavy rains. Rescuers used a boat and bucket loaders to pluck seven people from a swamped mobile home park in Lyndonville.

In upstate New York, authorities were closely watching major dams holding back drinking water reservoirs.

Throughout the region, hundreds of roads were impassable because of flooding or fallen trees, and some bridges had simply given way, including a 156-year-old hand-hewn, wooden, covered bridge across Schoharie Creek in Blenheim, N.Y. In all, more than a dozen towns in Vermont and at least three in New York remained cut off by flooded roads and bridges.

Still, there were glimmers of good news. In Pennsylvania, the Delaware River largely remained in its banks, cresting several feet lower than feared. The forecast for flooding on the Mohawk River in New York also eased at Schenectady, N.Y., where officials had worried that high water might threaten the city's drinking water and sewage treatment plant.

Early estimates put Irene's damage at $7 billion to $10 billion, much smaller than the impact of monster storms such as Hurricane Katrina, which did more than $100 billion in damage. Irene's effects are small compared to the overall U.S. economy, which produces about $14 trillion of goods and services every year.

While hard-hit regions, such as the North Carolina coast, will suffer from lost tourism, rebuilding homes, repairing cars, and fixing streets and bridges should provide a small boost to economy, experts said.

Irene was also good for business at Fantastic Kids Toys in New York City, where sales of board games and arts-and-crafts items surged on Friday and Saturday. "People were buying anything to keep their kids busy," owner Steve Reis said.

Many people were surprised by the destruction that Hurricane Irene wrought in communities far inland. But National Weather Service records show that 59 percent of the deaths attributed to hurricanes since the 1970s have been from freshwater flooding.

As for why the flooding was so bad this time, Shaun Tanner, a meteorologist with the forecasting service Weather Underground, noted that August had been unusually wet, and Irene's sheer size meant huge amounts of rain were dumped over a very large area.

"More attention should have been paid to the torrential rain that Irene was going to dump not only on coastal areas, but also inland. That was clear several days ahead of time," Tanner said.

Reconnecting to Self

Relationship to self, what is it?

As a clinician, I often find myself asking a client a relatively simple question such as, how do you feel about that? Surprisingly, what I often hear is I don?t know. Now though that may seem trivial, it strikes me how many of us are often truly out of touch with how we feel, or what we want, or what we like or dislike. maybe we once knew the answers to those questions, but suddenly we find we really aren?t sure anymore. This means somewhere along the line, for whatever reason, we have lost touch with ourselves. We have lost that essential and deep connection to our self. Everything stems from our relationship to self, our thoughts, beliefs, how we interact with others and our perception of the world around us. when we have a centered and healthy relationship with ourselves, then we are better able to navigate our lives from that same centered and healthy place which allows us to get through the ups and downs of life easier and take a more mindful approach to our lives.

It takes a mindful approach. a mindful approach promotes empathy and compassion for the self as well as others. This in turn cultivates mental well-being and enhances our physical and spiritual health. it is really about listening and attunement to your inner world. it means creating resourcefulness within yourself and trusting your unique inner knowledge. when we are able to slow things down we can increase our moment to moment awareness, enabling us to take in the subtleties around us. This tunes us in to our world.. our own world, the one in which we live from day-to-day. This helps us to cultivate and stay connected to that relationship to self.

Why do we lose it?

There are many reasons and many ways we lose touch with who we are. For some, it may be an effect of growing up and taking on more responsibilities, or doing for others until we forget about doing for ourselves. some of us are married too busy with our relationship and children to make time for ourselves. Others may one day wake up and find the children don?t need the time and attention they once did and find themselves becoming increasingly anxious or depressed because they have this empty void to fill. Let?s face it life moves fast and it is easy to get caught up in the flow. even with the best of intentions and efforts to make me time each week; we may find we have let go of many things that once brought us so much pleasure. For some people a strong sense of self may have never truly have been formed once they left adolescence behind and came crashing into adulthood.

What does it look like when we lose that connection?

Losing connection to our true self may manifest as uncertainty about the things we want or that are good for us. it may mean we would never spend money on something as frivolous as a massage, a pedicure, or dinner at that pricey restaurant we?d love to go to one day ? let alone take ourselves on a retreat or vacation. maybe even the thought of soaking in a hot bath with nice smelling oils and lit candles seems too extravagant on a weeknight just because. Often fear develops, fear of being alone, fear of not succeeding. But what is fear? I like to think of it as an acronym, F.E.a.R. for ? False Evidence Appearing Real. Often there is no real evidence to back up the fears we create, and it?s our negative thinking that feeds into these fears helping them to grow into more a believable reality. Take the time to think about that the next time fear becomes an obstacle for you.

Believe in yourself and your ability to change your thoughts and in turn your life. change will happen. For some, a strong dependence on others may develop. This may be seen most often within the context of intimate relationships, like those who go from relationship to relationship just because they can?t face being by themselves. Or maybe they settle for an unhealthy or loveless relationship because being with someone is better than being alone. some people who have lost their connection to self may have trouble spending time by themselves, or put themselves down, with self-deprecating thoughts and behaviors. when a person does not love and appreciate themselves, they often allow others to treat them poorly. They may feel they are unworthy or undeserving of doing or having someone else do something nice for themselves. other may develop lethargy and lose their motivation to make positive change in their lives, whether that means leaving a job they can?t stand or going back to school or making important decisions. Sometimes we have to hit bottom before we begin to think about approaching life differently and clueing in to our true self. someone who struggles to speak up for them self may feel that their thoughts, feelings or opinions aren?t really important, or perhaps they feel too intimidated to say anything. again, how we treat ourselves all goes back to our relationship to self. This is the base from which we develop our sense of the world around us, and having a strong, healthy relationship to self empowers us to seek others relationships that are healthy and bring more joy into our lives because it is what we want and we know we deserve that.

Why is it important?

Having a solid relationship to self means we know ourselves. by knowing who we are, not just as a mother, or a partner or an employee or professional, but truly knowing our self, we develop a sense of centeredness within ourselves. We enjoy time by ourselves whether we are doing something alone or doing nothing and just enjoying that space and time without feeling that nervous energy or feeling like we have to fill every moment until we can be with others again or get back to our busy routine. when we have a healthy relationship to self, we begin to treat ourselves well. why should we wait for someone else to buy us something we like? Or take us for a drive through the mountains or find someone who wants to go with us to yoga or dance classes or that interesting sounding lecture we?d like to attend. when we like who we are and see ourselves as whole we will do the things we like simply because we like them, whether or not we have to do them alone.

Getting to know ourselves also means developing a trust with ourselves, trusting that we will not let ourselves down or allow someone else to treat us in a way that does not feel good. it means learning to trust that small, quiet voice inside of us that in hindsight seems to know the right choices before we realize it intellectually. This is the voice of intuition. We all have it. some people may call it Mother?s intuition or that gut feeling. The truth is, we have an aspect of self that knows what is good for us and what feels right.. but often we dismiss or ignore that aspect. only to think later, I knew it I should have listened to myself Listening to what our inner wisdom has to tell us will never steer us wrong. This is the part of self that we often lose touch with because we are so busy running on auto pilot, or reacting from our emotions. a big part of developing a stronger relationship with our self is learning to trust that voice. make it our trusted, reliable friend. Afterall. it?s a part of us.. it isn?t going anywhere no matter how many times we turn our back on it or ignore it.

Fostering motivation is also key when nurturing a relationship to self ? when our motivation is genuine ? it keeps us on track. when we are other-focused or moving forward with regrets or negative feelings, we lose our motivation.

How do we get it or get it back?

Ask yourself, do you treat yourself like you would treat your best friend?

Take the time to begin getting back in touch with who you are. learn to treat yourself well and appreciate time spent alone.

I like to think of this process as standing on a deserted highway and looking out at the road as it stretches into the horizon as far as the eye can see. The road represents the path leading to abundant possibilities and openness to the opportunities that lie ahead of us. An easy way to remember this is C?ing the Road or the acronym C-ROAD. Nurturing a relationship to ourselves isn?t a difficult thing to do. however, it takes Commitment, Recognition, Openness, Acceptance, and Desire.

Commitment to change. once we have accepted who, where, and what we are we need to commit to working towards what we want. This takes daily effort to do what we can with what we have. Change your thoughts and beliefs. not believing you are limited, those beliefs only impose such limitations. This may be as simple as reframing your negative thoughts into more positive ones to get yourself through the day. it means going inside to that inner world that exists within us all, really listening and deciding what the meaning is of what we are hearing. (e.g., Hmmm.. I don?t like the way this feels, maybe that means I leave or I cancel my plans. )

Recognition that change is needed. so you are unhappy, or maybe you find yourself getting into one bad relationship after the other, or making choices and decisions that you later regret over and over again because you just weren?t sure about what you wanted to do. Recognizing that something needs to change in order for things to be different is the initial step.

This also includes tackling your fears to take the next step.

Openness ? being open to what may manifest. There are many ways to do this, but some of the active ways we can foster a sense of openness may be through giving back. maybe this means volunteering with an organization that holds our interest or has a cause that is meaningful to us. maybe it means helping out a friend, family member or colleague. when we do this we cultivate gratefulness, and appreciation for ourselves and others. it is important to explore our likes and interests. maybe we are at a place in life where we aren?t sure of what we these are anymore. getting out there and trying things out is a way to figure out first hand if something resonates with us or if we?d like to do it again. when we have expectations, we set ourselves up to be disappointed. going out with no expectations and staying open to whatever the outcome may be is the best way to prevent that.

Acceptance of who you are and what you?ve got. We are all unique individuals, that?s part of the juice in life. We come in all shapes, sizes, and abilities. We are all imperfect which really means we are perfect and whole just as we are. though it?s great to have goals and dreams and desires, and move towards those, when we are constantly wanting what we don?t have, or wishing for what we can?t be we deny our true self. when we think of what we lack we don?t appreciate what we have. This is the difference between negative and positive energy. when we come from a place of positive thinking, we put more positive energy out and receive more positive energy back. On the flip side, when we are stuck in negativity, it becomes like quick sand and sucks us down further and further. We have so many strengths and so much value just because we are. Rediscovering these things is another part of cultivating that relationship to self. Accept what is and be grateful.. that?s the energy that will help elicit the change in how you treat yourself.

Desire to make changes necessary. without true desire it?s just another good intention. True desire is like being stuck in the desert under the hot sun and you find you are out of water and all you can think about is that first, long, cool drink.

When we have true desire to make the changes we crave, we will begin to experience small changes. when we have a better sense of who we are as a person, our feelings and thoughts, our likes and dislikes, our needs and wants, then we know what to ask for and can educate others on how we want to be treated.

Some of us may not know how to get in touch with our feelings and thoughts; this is something that is learned. Perhaps we were never taught how to do that, and have never given the time or the attention to check in with ourselves in that way. Tuning in to the physical body is a good way to initiate that connection. Paying attention, cultivating mindfulness and going inward and considering what is going on within us physically. try asking questions such as, why does my stomach feel weird? or, how come I am getting a strange feeling right now? Scan your body to see if you feel tension anywhere. Is your heart racing? What is that telling you? when we know ourselves, specifically the inner self, we become empowered to make good things happen for ourselves, knowing we deserve it and we have the power to do that for ourselves.

It has been considered as a valuable investment to increase the revenue of a business.? Businesses today are counting on the right customer lists which are deemed to be as a compelling resource by Internet marketers.? An online existence of your business should be able to develop a proper list of customers to be able to easily, effectively and efficiently market your products and services.

It is not just about building a list that gives one an edge but also maintaining a long term and harmonious relationship with your loyal customers.? So what really are the advantages of list building?

a.?? ?Customer base is increased;

c.?? ?Customer relationship is improved;
d.?? ?Competitors are knocked off; and,
e.?? ?Popularity is increased

Now that you already have an idea what list building can do for your business, the next question that one may pose is how to create and maintain not just a list but an effective list to make sure that you stay on top of your business?? Most people think that list building is just gathering or collecting names and contact details.? Here are some guidelines that may help you out in your list building:

1.? Informative, fresh and relevant content ? Your site?s content is very vital especially when we talk about the internet and attracting targeted traffic.? You have to put up a considerable amount of effort when you want to attract and build a list of customers.? Having a very fresh, updated, high quality, relevant and enlightening subject should be your priority to sustain your subscriber?s interest and get them inclined.? You also have to make sure that you frequently update it with educational or interesting content so that people will always have something to look forward for.? Also, keep your emails to subscribers brief and concise without losing the essence and important things that you want to inform them (i.e. special deals, promotions, offerings, or discounts).? This will avoid you from losing customers from your subscription list.

2.? Additional box for subscription ? It is highly suggested that one puts up a subscription box in each page of the website.? This will increase your chances of people signing up on your email list because it is very visible.? This is very effective in expanding customer base and repeating business with current customers.

3.? Prize for signing up ? Offer some incentives to entice readers or visitors to subscribe to the mailing list.? It doesn?t have to be big it can be free membership, discount coupons, or a discount on their next purchase.? This will definitely support you in generating an effective list of customers.

4.? Set-up an Auto Responder ? This is advantageous especially if you are new to list building.? This will actually filter your list building to interested people rather than having a pool of names with a few having no interest at all with the product or service that you are selling.? Auto responder actually requests for a visitor?s name and contact details when they bought something online or asked for some or any information related to your site.

Catholic school cancels Muslim goodwill event

A Roman Catholic high school dropped plans for a Ramadan dinner after hearing complaints about its partnership with a Muslim advocacy group that federal officials have linked to a terror financing case.

Archbishop Dennis Schnurr received "emotionally charged" emails ? mostly from outside the area ? and asked the girls school to cancel plans to host the Friday night dinner, Kirsten MacDougal, president of Mother of Mercy school, told The Cincinnati Enquirer. The dinner to build goodwill with Muslims will be held instead at a church parish center.

There were no threats among the "heated" complaints over the school's plans to co-host the meal with the local chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, but the archbishop didn't want to take chances with children's safety, Dan Andriacco, a spokesman for the Cincinnati archdiocese, told The Associated Press on Friday.

"There was an elevated emotional temperature on the part of some people that caused the archbishop concern," Andriacco said.

Roula Allouch, board president of the local CAIR chapter, said she considered canceling the event after she learned of the school's decision, but was grateful that a local group of lay Catholics would rent the parish center to CAIR for the meal.

"It's unfortunate for an event with the purpose of bringing together people of faith" was almost canceled, Allouch told the newspaper.

Andriacco said he had not seen the complaints, but believes they mostly centered on concerns over the national council.

Schnurr was not available for comment.

The school planned to co-host the dinner after groups of Mercy students and students linked with the council worked together on community service, and several families were planning to attend, MacDougal told the AP.

"We share the concern over safety, but it is sad that this has distracted from our positive intent on both sides," she said.

MacDougal didn't know how many complaints the archdiocese received, but said they were mostly emails from people who follow the news about CAIR's national office.

CAIR, based in Washington D.C., is a Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. It has been on the radar of federal agencies investigating terrorism for years, and the FBI no longer works directly with the group. Local agents do talk to CAIR officials and have investigated claims of civil rights violations against Muslims, said Mike Brooks, the FBI spokesman in Cincinnati.

"They are not considered to be a terrorist organization or anything like that," Brooks said.

MacDougal said her school and the archdiocese still support interfaith dialogue, but the dinner's proximity to the 10th anniversary of 9/11 also was a factor.

Tom Tegenkamp ? whose daughter wanted to attend the event ? understands the concerns, but said it was a "shame this had to be canceled over security concerns."

Another Mercy parent, Kelly Jennings, told the Enquirer that she was glad it was canceled.

"There were a lot of parents who were up in arms about it," she said.

Ramadan is the holiest month in Islam, a time when Muslims abstain from eating and drinking during the daylight hours but break their fast with a meal at night that is sometimes shared with non-Muslims.

Intellectual Property is a Useful Tool For Leather Enterprises to ...

Intellectual property rights are the rights of his or her creative intellectual labor enjoyed exclusive rights, including patents, trademarks, copyrights and other rights. Intellectual property system gives innovators have the legal right to prevent others without the permission of the rights to use, making protection of rights of innovators, a system encouraging innovation. Intellectual property system has been implemented by countries in the world to protect innovation system.

Tool for Market Competition

Science and technology are primary productive forces, the world economy, every major development is the result of technological development to promote, whether national, or enterprise, the first to master the advanced technology, the first to innovation, who will take the forefront in the development. Intellectual property rights as the protection of intellectual innovation, has become an important means of competition in the market.

Intellectual property system gives technology innovators, brand owners in a certain period of time to enjoy the exclusive right to their intellectual products. This right can be called ?legal monopoly, winner takes all.? To any other person to use their innovations, brands must be with the agreement and pay the appropriate fees.

Violation of this exclusive community will conduct a variety of legal measures of sanctions, which can effectively stop without innovators, brand owners permission to use innovation law, brand behavior, maintain innovators, brand owners stakeholders.

In order to capture the market, many international companies have increased in China?s patent portfolio. Foreign companies in China commonly used strategy is the first patent monopoly, then the standard monopoly, and then massive occupation of the Chinese market. ?International brands in China, the number of patent applications based on the Chinese market, the standard supply and demand, market potential of Chinese enterprises in which large areas in which international brands will seek patent protection, so you can maximize the inhibition of the rise of domestic brands the speed. ?State Intellectual Property Office Yang Tiejun, Deputy Secretary pointed out.

In recent years, becoming stronger as the awareness of independent innovation and related policies, have made the domestic trademark registration application, utility model patents, design patent applications leapt on board the world?s No. 1 position soon.

However, China?s patent system and intellectual property rights by law enforcement environment, companies will be more to create small applications for the invention and utility model patents, technological level and competitiveness with foreign companies, there is still a large gap.

At present China with independent intellectual property core technology for enterprises of only three ten thousandths, 99% of enterprises do not apply for a patent, 60% of companies do not own the trademarks; Many companies are in a ?manufacturing? no ?create?, the ?property rights ?no? knowledge ?of the state, some companies even survival depend on imitation and counterfeiting. These are clear to the Chinese patent ?Mishap?: quantity, poor quality, competitive patent worrying. The lack of independent core technology of many industrial status, as China?s industrial development and economic construction of the serious constraints.

The Basis of Corporate Brand

As we all know, our traditional manufacturing scale, ?China? has long renowned overseas, but no doubt is a traditional manufacturing technology level is not high, lack of independent brands, hard to compete with international brand companies. In particular, a large number of processing enterprises, using relatively cheap labor in China for international brands OEM production, processing fees for modest, the lack of ability to resist risks, and, as China?s economic development, labor, rising income levels, many stickers card processing companies survive difficult to sustain. Faced strong pressure transformation and upgrading.

Leather industry as the traditional manufacturing industry is facing the same problem. Although China?s leather industry output, output ports of the world?s first, is real leather producing countries, but low value-added products, high-end market has long been monopolized by foreign brands.

Industry to sustainable and healthy development must change the mode of development, strengthen independent innovation and brand strategy to improve intellectual property rights. Brand strategy is on the trademarks, trade names (size), goodwill and other intangible assets of the investment, operation and to develop the economy, the development of industry, the development of enterprise management mechanism and competitive strategy.

Specifically, is the brand awareness, striving to well-known brand to brand promotion, and promote industrial development.

Trademark registration is the basis for the implementation of brand strategy. A good logo design does not mean that a good trademark. A good mark in the long-term use, the building has been carefully cultivate, promote, maintain and gradually formed, which are inseparable from the protection of the law. In most countries and regions in the world, the law prior to registration of trade marks are protected by the principle, the same mark, the first to apply for trademark registration to obtain trademark registration, the trademark belongs to whom, the law provided for its registered trademark legal protection.

Worth noting is that trademark protection is a regional, that in a country or region to obtain registration of the mark, only in the country or the region as a trademark protected by law, without obtaining trademark registration in other countries or regions still belongs to an unregistered trademark can not be registered trademarks of legal protection.

Some companies are accustomed to first hit the market, good market prospects see only after the registration of its trademark to apply, but to apply for trademark registration until their own often find their earlier mark has been registered by others, and caused very passive situation.

International Registration of Marks is the first step into the global market in international trade, in order to export their own brands, trademarks must be registered in the country, otherwise, can only OEM for others to do the wedding gown gives way wage, earned by only the low end of industry value chain.

China?s leather industry relies more recent years, more and more Chinese products into the international market, if the brand is registered by experience, would mean the loss of the country (region) of the market. Re-registered trademark, re-create a brand re-enter the country (region), will spend a great price.

Comet Double Feature: Comets Elenin & Garradd Now Showing in Night Sky (SPACE.com)

This story was updated at 5 p.m. EDT.

Skywatchers often ask "When's the next comet?" In fact, if you?re prepared to do a bit of searching, there are always several comets visible in the night sky, including two right now.

Some comets are like old friends, they keep coming back at regular intervals to visit. These are called periodic comets; Comet Halley was the first such comet to be identified, by Edmond Halley back in 1705. It returns to the inner solar system every 75 to 76 years; its last appearance was in 1986 and its next will be in 2061. At present Halley is out just beyond Neptune;s orbit.

Other comets are one-time visitors: they come in to visit us from the Oort Cloud, warm themselves for a few months by the sun, and then head back out to the farthest reaches of the solar system. [Best Close Encounters with Comets]

There are two comets currently visiting the inner solar system ? comet Elenin and comet Garradd ? so the next two months will provide some excellent opportunities to observe these unusual visitors. The sky map of the two comets here shows they locations over the next few weeks.

All comets share one characteristic: they are like "dirty snowballs" in their makeup. Their nucleus of rock and ice, when warmed by the sun, sheds its ice which forms a graceful tail as it?s swept away by the solar wind. Because it?s the solar wind that drives the gas and vapor away, comet?s tails always point away from the sun.

In the sky, many comets appear like ghostly fingers pointing down towards Earth. That is one reason why comets have traditionally been viewed as harbingers of death and disaster. To astronomers, on the contrary, they are objects of great beauty and attract close scientific scrutiny for the information they reveal about the ancient history of the solar system and its farthest reaches.

Comet Elenin now showing

The first comet visitor in the sky we'll review is comet Elenin (C2010 X1). You may have heard about, because it?s become a popular item for the gloom and doom crowd, who see portents of disaster in ordinary astronomical objects.

The truth about Comet Elenin is that it is a quite ordinary, fairly small comet discovered on Dec. 10, 2010 by Russian amateur astronomer Leonid Elenin using a remote controlled telescope in Arizona.

This comet will pass closest to the sun on Sept. 10 (45 million miles or 72 million kilometers) and closest to Earth on Oct. 16 at a distance of 22 million miles (35 million km.)

Despite the fact that this is a really tiny body, 3 or 4 km. in diameter which will miss the Earth by 22 million miles, the purveyors of gloom and doom have seized upon it as bringing disaster upon the Earth. Please don?t take them seriously, instead try to spot this interesting little object.

At present, comet Elenin is too close to the sun to be viewed from the Northern Hemisphere, though observers south of the equator may catch it low in the western sky after sunset. Northern observers' turn will come after the comet passes the sun and starts back out towards the Oort Cloud.

In the last few days of September, Elenin will separate from the sun in our morning sky. It will be visible in binoculars in the morning sky for all of October, and we will publish finder maps then.

There is an unusual opportunity to ?observe? this comet when it is very close to the sun during the last week of September. To do this, you won?t be able to use your eyes or any optical aid; instead you will use your computer.

Several times every day, the SOHO satellite returns images of the sun, including ones from the observatory's LASCO C3 camera which has a field of view of about 15 degrees. This has an occulting disk which blocks the Sun itself but lets the background stars appear.

If you take a look at it right now, you'll see Venus off to the left of the sun and the star Regulus to the right. During the last week of September, you will be able to see Comet Elenin pass through the field of view.

Comet Garradd graces the sky

The other bright comet in the night sky hasn't received the publicity of comet Elenin but is actually a better opportunity for skywatchers. This is comet Garradd (C2009 P1), which was discovered on Aug. 13, 2009 by Australian astronomer G. J. Garradd. [Video: Where Comets Come From]

Comet Garradd is very easy for any experienced skywatcher to locate and observe with binoculars. Currently it is just south of the small but well-known constellation of Sagitta, the arrow. This arrow-shaped constellation is right in the middle of the summer triangle formed by the bright stars Vega, Deneb, and Altair. On Wednesday (Aug. 24), Garradd was right under the tip of the arrow.

Tonight (Friday, Aug. 26), Garradd it will be impaled by the shaft of the arrow, and one week later (Friday, Sept. 2) it will be right by the "hook" of the popular Coathanger Cluster, also known as Brocchi?s Cluster. During that time it should increase in brightness slowly from about magnitude 8.2 to about magnitude 8.1, an easy object with binoculars.

The comet will continue moving westward and brightening, reaching magnitude 7.0 on Feb. 12. Astronomers measure the brightness of a night sky object using a reverse scale of magnitude. The lower the number of an object's magnitude, the brighter the object appears.

The sky map in this story shows the position of comet Garradd at 11 p.m. EDT each night from through Sept 2.

A reminder: All of the magnitudes given here for comets are estimates; comet brightness is notoriously hard to predict. The comets may be fainter than predicted or we may get lucky and get a couple of really bright comets.

Twitter Review: Often an overlook aspect for business owners, this book offers simple?practical?ways for target.

Review: Published in 2008, this is a book that provides information which ?is still current. ?Among the topics discussed and evaluated include monitoring employees internet usage, sexual?harassment, pre-employment screening, check?immigration?status of employees and other vital and important topics that entrepreneurs overlook. ?The book contains different writers and due to this each chapter and topic has a different voice, so it does seem more like a collection of articles on security business topics rather than a book with a consistent voice. ?Overall, this is still a good book to pick up for information that might normally be overlooked or taken for granted for many businesses.

"Emma, I just wanted to let you know that you are all-the-way-beautiful -- not just pretty, but smart and kind-hearted," Carrey says in a video valentine to the actress posted on the site. "If I were a lot younger, I would marry you, and we would have chubby little freckle-faced kids."

Carrey goes on to elaborate on the domestic bliss they could enjoy. Camping trips. Board games. And the sex? Hoo-boy, to hear Jimbo tell it, the sex would be frequent and quite satisfying.

Watch Carrey awkwardly pitch woo over the Internet on his Web site here (after all, isn't watching Marines ask celebrities out via YouTube getting a little stale?):
