Chrome beta for Android has been updated to version 28 (28.0.1500.21), bringing a number of requested features along with the new code base. Tablets now have the same full screen experience that phones have as of version 27, as the toolbar and omnibox simply disappear as you scroll down the page. In addition, automatic translate for pages not in the device's native language is available, just like users are used to on the desktop. Here's the bullet point change log:
The jury is still out about any speed increases, but my first impressions are favorable. If you're following the Chrome browser beta track for Android, grab today's update in Google Play or from the link above.

TBILISI, Georgia (AP) ? Allies of Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili ? a former prime minister and a provincial governor ? were charged on Tuesday with embezzlement and abuse of office in another sign of an ongoing power struggle between the country's top two officials.
After dominating Georgian politics for nine years, pro-Western Saakashvili suffered a humiliating defeat last fall when his party lost a parliamentary election to the Georgian Dream coalition led by billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili, who became Georgia's prime minister.
A constitutional reform further weakened Saakashvili's hand by shifting the government's powers from the presidency to the parliament and the prime minister.
The election was the first constitutional transfer of top executive power in Georgia, and it was hailed as a breakthrough for the post-Soviet region. But problems soon emerged.
Saakashvili's presidential term does not end until October, so he must serve alongside his arch-foe, Russia-friendly Ivanishvili. The two men have been locked in an intense power struggle, and authorities have leveled abuse of office charges against some of Saakashvili's top lieutenants.
On Tuesday, former Prime Minister Vano Merabishvili, who currently leads Saakashvili's party, was charged with embezzlement and abuse of office charges and arrested him in Kutaisi, a city in western Georgia.
Prosecutors accuse him of taking on the payroll in the Labor Ministry nearly 22,000 party activists whose only job was to canvass for the party in the run-up to October's parliamentary election. Ex-Labor Minister Zurab Chiaberashvili, who currently serves as the governor of the Kakheti region, also was arrested along with Merabishvili on the same charges.
Merabishvili, the key architect of Saakashvili's policies, is the highest-ranking member of the president's inner circle to face charges. Prosecutors also accuse him of illegally appropriating a lush seaside residence and using government funds to maintain it and hire personnel. Other charges include his alleged involvement in the police crackdown on a protest in 2011.
Merabishvili's lawyer said he rejected all the charges.
Saakashvili has denounced a series of criminal investigations targeting former officials and allies of his as politically driven. Speaking in televised remarks Tuesday, Saakashili said the decision to arrest Merabishvili was "made on a political level" and warned that it will tarnish Georgia's image in the West.
"Georgia may face a problem of international isolation," Saakashvili said.
Ivanishvili rejected political motives behind Merabishvili's arrest.
"It's a pity that we lost (a chance) to get such president," he said in a sardonic reference to Merabishvili's alleged intention to run for president in an election later this year.
Ivanishvili, who earned his fortune in Russia, has denied Saakashvili's accusations of kowtowing to the Kremlin and pledged to maintain the course toward Georgia's integration with the West.
But he also has pledged to repair the ties with Moscow, which were ruptured in the August 2008 Russian-Georgian war that ended with Moscow recognizing two breakaway Georgian provinces of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Wind, humidity and rainfall combined precisely to create the massive killer tornado in Moore, Okla. And when they did, the awesome amount of energy released over that city dwarfed the power of the atomic bomb that leveled Hiroshima.
On Tuesday afternoon, the National Weather Service gave it the top-of-the-scale rating of EF-5 for wind speed and breadth and severity of damage. Wind speeds were estimated at between 200 and 210 mph.
Several meteorologists contacted by The Associated Press used real time measurements to calculate the energy released during the storm's life span of almost an hour. Their estimates ranged from 8 times to more than 600 times the power of the Hiroshima bomb with more experts at the high end.
The tornado at some points was 1.3 miles wide, and its path went on for 17 miles and 40 minutes. That's long for a regular tornado but not too unusual for such a violent one, said research meteorologist Harold Brooks at the National Severe Storms Laboratory in Norman, Okla. Less than 1 percent of all U .S. tornadoes are this violent ? only about 10 a year, he said.
With the third strong storm hitting Moore in 14 years, some people are wondering why Moore? It's a combination of geography, meteorology and lots of bad luck, experts said.
If you look at the climate history of tornadoes in May, you will see they cluster in a spot ? maybe 100 miles wide ? in central Oklahoma "and there's good reason for it," said Adam Houston, meteorology professor at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. That's the spot where the weather conditions of warm, moist air and strong wind shear needed for tornadoes combine in just the right balance.
The hot spot is more than just the city of Moore. Several meteorologists offer the same explanation for why that suburb seemed to be hit repeatedly by violent tornadoes: "bad luck."
Scientists know the key ingredients that go into a devastating tornado. But they are struggling to figure out why they develop in some big storms and not others. They also are still trying to determine what effects, if any, global warming has on tornadoes.

VIRGINIA WATER, England (AP) ? Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia don't like each other, and they're making no effort to disguise their feelings.
The verbal feuding began May 11 during the third round of The Players Championship. It resumed this week on both sides of the Atlantic when Woods offered a one-word answer if he thought about contacting Garcia to put the matter to rest.
"No," he replied with a tight smile.
Garcia fired back at a sponsor function outside London.
"He called me a whiner. That's probably right," he told reporters. "It's also probably the first thing he's told you guys that's true in 15 years. I know what he is like. You guys are finding out."
Garcia tried to tone down the barbs Tuesday at the BMW Championship when asked about the spat.
"I can't like everybody and there's people that you connect with and there's people that you don't," Garcia said at Wentworth. "He doesn't need me in his life, I don't need him in mine and let's move on and keep doing what we're doing. There's never really been a true connection I would have with maybe Luke (Donald) or Adam Scott or some of the other guys that I get along with well.
"I think we should kind of move on and forget ? well, it will be difficult to forget ? but kind of move on about what happened."
Disputes among golfers are nothing new, though it's rare for two high-profile players to go at each other through the media.
The animosity between them goes as far back as 2000, when Garcia beat Woods in the Monday night exhibition "Battle at Bighorn" and celebrated as if he had won something much more important. Two years later in the U.S. Open at Bethpage Black, where Woods won wire-to-wire, Garcia complained that the second round should have been halted because of rain and that "if Tiger Woods would have been out there, it would have been called."
The latest chapter took place on the second fairway at the TPC Sawgrass in the third round, when Garcia had a one-shot lead. He was preparing to play his second shot on the par 5 from the fairway when he was disrupted by cheers from the gallery around Woods deep in the trees. Woods was about 50 yards away and couldn't see the Spaniard. The crowd burst into cheers when Woods took a 5-wood from his bag to play a risky shot through a gap in the trees.
During a storm delay, Garcia suggested in a TV interview that Woods could have kept the crowd from cheering if he had been paying closer attention. Later that evening, Woods said he understood from marshals that Garcia had already hit.
"Not real surprising that he's complaining about something," Woods added, which only fired up the Spaniard.
Garcia said the next day to Sky Sports, "He's not the nicest guy on tour."
Woods wound up winning The Players Championship, improving his record to 6-0 when he plays with Garcia in the final group on the weekend.
Woods was at media day Monday for the AT&T National, where he is the defending champion, when he received the final question about Garcia and gave the one-word answer. Garcia offered a more detailed response when asked in England if he would ever call Woods.
"First of all, I don't have his number," Garcia said. "And secondly, I did nothing wrong and don't have anything to say to him. And he wouldn't pick up the phone, anyway."
Garcia conceded their dislike for each other has been "going on for a long time."
"The problem is, I'm one of the guys that has to say something," Garcia said. "A lot of people think about it, but don't want to say anything. He can and will beat me a lot of times, but is not going to step on me. I'm not afraid of him."
Woods has competed against more than 50 players in match play since 1997, though he has never played Garcia. The Spaniard was asked he would like to face Woods in the Ryder Cup next year at Gleneagles.
"It's great, and it is what it is, and it doesn't mean I cannot play with him," Garcia replied. "It's just another player ? obviously, a good player. It's just when I'm playing with someone I enjoy, there's a bit more talking going around, and you're playing with someone that you don't fancy as much, you're just a little bit quiet."

TiVo narrows 1st-quarter loss as it adds subscribers; sees loss in current quarter
The Associated Press
TiVo Inc. narrowed its fiscal-first quarter loss as revenue grew from an increase in subscribers.
The company on Monday posted a loss of $10.3 million, or 9 cents per share, for the quarter that ended April 30. That's compared with a loss of $20.8 million, or 17 cents per share, in the prior year.
Revenue rose 22 percent, to $82.6 million from $67.8 million.
Analysts polled by FactSet had forecast a loss of 14 cents per share on revenue of $78.3 million.
TiVo's subscription growth through pay-TV distributors such as DirecTV, RCN and Virgin Media has been "impressive," said TiVo CEO Tom Rogers. The subscriber base grew by 277,000 to 2.4 million. For devices sold directly by TiVo, subscriptions fell by 22,000 to 1 million.
The company's hardware business was also more profitable in the first quarter.
The Alviso, Calif.-based digital video recording company has struggled to make money, posting annual losses in nearly all of the past 10 years. It has gotten a boost in the past couple years from patent settlements, however, and litigation continues. TiVo starts a trial versus Motorola next month. Arris Group Inc. now owns the TV set-top business that used to be part of Motorola Mobility.
TiVo forecast a loss between $13 million and $16 million for the current quarter. Analysts predict a loss of $12.4 million.
The company's shares rose 8 cents to close regular trading at $12.66, up 36 percent in the past 12 months, and added 10 cents after hours Monday.

The rally in small stocks is a sign investors are more willing to take risk. It also means they're more optimistic about the U.S. economy versus Europe, which is still mired in recession.
The Dow Jones industrial average was up 28 points at 15,382, a gain of 0.2 percent.

Boost Mobile launched a Mobile Wallet app and service today at CTIA 2013 with an interesting twist in that it is tied to a Visa Prepaid card. Boost Mobile customers simply hit up a store to get signed up, download an app onto their handset and once funds are added to their account can use them in a wide variety of ways. From sending money via the app to people in 135 other countries, the ability to pay more that 3,500 billers nationwide, top up your prepaid account and using the included Visa debit card any money in your account can be accessed via that card as well. The app also makes use of your handset's camera with its Quick Check feature -- which is coming soon -- allowing an account holder to snap a photo of a check and submit it using the app to have the check's value added to your mobile wallet once approved -- which is nifty, if you don't use a bank we suppose. There are no month-to-month fees for the service but each bill you pay will cost some $2 and climbs depending on how quickly you need the payment made against the account. The service launches in Los Angeles, San Diego and parts of New Jersey today with rollout to all markets expected by the end of the year.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A Los Angeles sheriff's spokesman says 'Terminator 2' star Edward Furlong has been arrested on suspicion of violating a restraining order filed by his ex-girlfriend.
Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said that deputies responding to the scene Thursday in West Hollywood found Furlong hiding in a nearby property.
Jail records show he was released Saturday just after noon after being held on $100,000 bail.
In March, the 35-year-old actor had been sentenced to six months in jail for violating his probation in a 2010 case for violating a similar restraining order.
He has been the subject of such orders taken out by both his ex-wife and ex-girlfriend.
The actor was also charged in January of battery of an ex-girlfriend.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A tornado half a mile wide struck near Oklahoma City on Sunday, part of a massive storm front that hammered the central United States. News reports said at least one person had died.
By early Sunday evening, 19 tornados had touched down in parts of Iowa, Oklahoma and Kansas, according to the National Weather Service and local news reports.
Fox News reported that one person was killed in Shawnee, Oklahoma, east of Oklahoma City.
Police in Shawnee could not immediately be reached to confirm the report.
Officials of the National Weather Service in Oklahoma issued a series of increasingly urgent warnings in the late afternoon and evening, including an alert on Twitter about a tornado striking Pink, a town on the edge of Oklahoma City.
"Large tornado west of Pink!" the post read. "Take cover RIGHT NOW in Pink! DO NOT WAIT!"
An extreme weather system stretching from north Texas to Minnesota had been building for hours on Sunday when a "large tornado" touched down near Wichita, Kansas at 3:45 pm Central Standard time, according to a weather service alert.
Another alert warned of the likelihood of "exceptionally powerful, severe thunderstorms capable of destructive hail as large as baseballs," especially over southeast Kansas in the evening.
Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Iowa are all in the path of the storm system capable of producing winds of up to 80 miles per hour, large hail stones and violent tornadoes.
The storm prompted an unusually blunt warning from the central region of the National Weather Service, which covers 14 states.
"You could be killed if not underground or in a tornado shelter," it said. "Complete destruction of neighborhoods, businesses and vehicles will occur. Flying debris will be deadly to people and animals."
A tornado also touched down in southwest Wichita at 3:45 p.m. Central time, moving northeast at about 35 miles per hour toward Topeka, said Pat Slattery, spokesman for the National Weather Service for the U.S. Central region.
In northeast Oklahoma, the Lincoln County sheriff's office reported three tornado touchdowns in that region, NBC News said reported early on Sunday evening.
Slattery said the potential severity of the storm prompted the weather service to issue the stark advisory, which is part of a new warning system being tested in the U.S. Central region after a violent tornado that struck Joplin, Missouri on May 22, 2011, killing 158 people and injuring hundreds.
Slattery said the new advisory was reserved for severe tornadoes with the potential to form into "supercell" storms, which produce powerful winds and flash flooding. Supercells are considered to be the most dangerous of four categories of storms because of the extreme weather they generate.
A recent National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration assessment of the Joplin storm found that "when people heard the first tornado warning, they did not immediately seek shelter. They looked for a secondary source to confirm the tornado," Slattery said. "That got some people killed."

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? A lottery official says 1 winning ticket has been sold in Florida for a record Powerball jackpot of more than $590 million.
Terry Rich, a lottery official in Iowa, confirmed the ticket matching all six numbers was sold in Florida. Rich told The Associated Press by telephone that details were expected to be announced later by Florida lottery officials about the actual ticket sold.
Powerball.com said the winner sold in Florida means the current estimated jackpot resets at $40 million or $25.1 million cash value.
The numbers drawn Saturday were: 10, 13, 14, 22, 52 and Powerball 11.
With four of every five possible combinations of Powerball numbers in play, someone was almost certain to win the game's highest jackpot, though chances of winning remained astronomically low at 1 in 175.2 million.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Twenty-three youths have died in the past nine days at initiation ceremonies that include circumcisions and survival tests, South African police said Friday.
Police have opened 22 murder cases in the deaths in the northeastern province of Mpumalanga, according to spokesman Lt. Col. Leonard Hlathi. He said an inquest is being held into the 23rd death, of a youth who complained of stomach pains and vomited.
Initiation ceremonies are common in South Africa, where youths partake in various activities as a rite of passage into adulthood, usually over the course of three weeks. Some 30,000 youths signed up for initiation this year.
In addition to being circumcised, the boys and young men are put through a series of survival tests which sometimes include exposure to South Africa's chilly winter conditions with skimpy clothing. Their faces are painted with red clay and they also are given herbal concoctions to drink.
Nelson Mandela, the first democratically elected president of South Africa, described the experience in his autobiography as "a kind of spiritual preparation for the trials of manhood."
Hlathi said that all the deaths occurred at government-registered initiation sites where medical practitioners usually are present. The government became involved to prevent such unnecessary deaths.
Mathibela Mokoena, chairman of the House of Traditional Leaders in Mpumalanga, says the Department of Health was alerted before the initiation ceremonies began, but only showed up after the first few deaths were reported. He said the department has now agreed to have officials present for the remainder of the ceremony.
It was not immediately possible to get a response from the department. The department spokesman was on a plane, an assistant said. The minister's spokesman did not answer his phone or respond to a telephone message.
The deaths are the highest recorded in Mpumalanga, surpassing the previous highest toll of eight some years ago, Mokoena said. He said early investigation by the House of Traditional Leaders showed some schools were negligent, leaving the youths in the care of young men instead of experienced adults.
Mokoena said some of the initiates were not in ideal health when they enrolled. He said new legislation is being introduced outlining procedures to be followed, and including a punishment of a life ban for those found negligent.
The suspected causes of the deaths were not released pending the results of post-mortems. Most deaths in the past have been caused by infection and loss of blood after circumcision.
Government spokeswoman Phumla Williams said the government is sending condolences to the families and urged creation of "better and safe initiation schools that will ensure the safe passage of young initiates to manhood and prevent the unfortunate loss of lives."

The Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia told world health officials that two health care workers became ill this month after being exposed to patients with the virus. One is critically ill.
Since September 2012, the World Health Organization has been informed of 40 confirmed cases of the virus, and 20 of the patients have died. The deaths occurred in Britain, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan.
Experts have suggested calling the new virus MERS, for Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, but officials have not signed off on that yet.
Experts are watching carefully for signs that the deadly virus can spread from person-to-person. Health officials say the virus has likely already spread between people in some circumstances, including hospital patients in France.
The new virus has caused severe respiratory disease in patients, some of them needing mechanical ventilators to help them breathe.
One of the Saudi health care workers is a 45-year-old man who is in critical condition. The other is a 43-year-old woman in stable condition. No other details about their jobs or where they work were released. Health workers were previously infected in a cluster in Jordan, though that was before the new coronavirus had been identified and before any special measures were taken to prevent its spread. That is not the case in Saudi Arabia and officials worry any new spread to health workers could suggest the virus is becoming more transmissible to people.
The new virus has been compared to SARS, an unusual pneumonia that first surfaced in China in late 2002 and erupted into a deadly international outbreak in early 2003. Spread of the virus in hospitals was a key development in the epidemic.
Ultimately, more than 8,000 cases were reported in about 30 countries, including eight people in the United States. The global tally included 774 deaths.
The SARS outbreak was declared contained by the summer of 2003, thanks to such measures as quarantines, hospital isolation of suspected cases, travel restrictions and the screening of airline passengers.
The WHO is currently not recommending any travel restrictions or special screening at airports or border crossings. Officials worry it will flare into an outbreak as big or worse. The new virus and SARS are both coronaviruses, a germ family that includes some cold viruses.
The new virus is distinct from SARS, but health officials worry it has potential to flare into a SARS-like international outbreak. But many questions remain about how it is spread, where it originated, and how deadly it truly is.

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - A struggle over the U.S.S. Enterprise's past and future helped sour J.J. Abrams on the "Star Trek" franchise and may have contributed to his decision to take on the "Star Wars" universe.
Competing ambitions between Paramount, CBS and Abrams' production company Bad Robot over merchandising surrounding the first film in the rebooted "Star Trek" franchise led the director to curtail plans to turn the series into a multi-platform experience that spanned television, digital entertainment and comic books, according to an individual with knowledge of the dispute.
J.J. just threw up his hands," the individual told TheWrap. "The message was, 'Why set up all this when we'll just be competing against ourselves?' The studio wanted to please Bad Robot, but it was allowing CBS to say yay or nay when it came to what was happening with the 'Star Trek' products."
"Star Trek Into Darkness" arrives in U.S. multiplexes Thursday with tie-ins ranging from Bing to Hasbro. It is expected to gross more than $100 million at the domestic box office over the extended weekend.
Yet this marketing assault pales compared to the one that Abrams (above) and Bad Robot once envisioned for "Star Trek" and now plan to construct around the new "Star Wars" films.
A major stumbling block: "Star Trek's" licensing and merchandising rights are spread over two media conglomerates with competing goals. The rights to the original television series from the 1960s remained with CBS after it split off from Paramount's corporate parent Viacom in 2006, while the studio retained the rights to the film series. CBS also held onto the ability to create future "Star Trek" TV shows.
Paramount must license the "Star Trek" characters from CBS Consumer Products for film merchandising.
Much to the dismay of Bad Robot, CBS' merchandising arm continued to create memorabilia and products based on the cast of the original 1960s series and market them to Trekkies. The production company did market research and found that there was brand confusion between Abrams' rebooted Enterprise crew and the one starring William Shatner and DeForest Kelley.
TheWrap has learned that Bad Robot asked CBS to stop making products featuring the original cast, but talks broke down over money. The network was making roughly $20 million a year on that merchandise and had no incentive to play nice with its former corporate brother, the individual said. In response, the company scaled back its ambitions to have "Star Trek's" storylines play out with television shows, spin-off films and online components, something Abrams had been eager to accomplish.
Paramount declined to comment for this article and a spokesperson for Bad Robot did not respond to a request to comment.
"As the merchandising rights holder for Star Trek, CBS Consumer Products has ongoing relationships with all our partners, including Paramount," a spokesman for CBS Consumer Products said in a statement. "We have worked closely with them for the last five years to create merchandise to enhance the movies and satisfy fans. We are all looking forward to a successful opening of ?Into Darkness.'"
Despite the initial bumpy ride, it appears that Paramount, Bad Robot and CBS Consumer Products worked more harmoniously on "Star Trek Into Darkness." The parties collaborated on a Star Trek video game (left) that will feature the voices of the film's stars Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto; a graphic novel prequel to the film that was overseen by screenwriter Roberto Orci; and a novelization from Simon & Schuster (below).
Still, Jeff Gomez, CEO of the transmedia consulting firm Starlight Runner Entertainment, says there could have been so many more lucrative tie-ins. He contends that the rebooted franchise has enormous potential outside the multiplex.
"Right now the 'Star Trek' movies are movies," Gomez said. "There is no apparent ongoing transmedia strategy behind them, just a handful of licensing opportunities around the release of 'Into Darkness.'
"Why would that be attractive to an artist who sees beyond the boundaries of the silver screen to envision a true multi-platform narrative all based on a global franchise?"
Abrams' ambitions to create a multi-platform film franchise will find a more natural home at Disney, analysts and industry experts tell TheWrap. As successful as "Star Trek" has been, few franchises match the profitability and cultural prominence of George Lucas' space opera, which would be difficult for any director to pass up.
"Disney has always been oriented to multi-platform revenue stream situations," Seth Willenson, a film library valuations expert, told TheWrap.
Moreover, Willenson notes that Abrams, who has a deal that is believed to include creative and profit participation in "Star Wars" inspired merchandise and spin-offs, will have more control in shaping the legacy of the Skywalker clan than he would have had with developing side projects for the "Star Trek" crew. Unlike with "Star Trek," with its rights split between Paramount and CBS, Disney owns the rights to "Star Wars" outright thanks to its $4 billion purchase of Lucasfilm last year.
"The derivative rights situation on 'Star Trek' is complicated because you're dealing with cross-company cultures, so it makes it harder to implement a grand plan," Willenson said.
As for Disney's grand "Star Wars" plan, it's sounding an awful lot like the one Abrams once envisioned for "Star Trek." There will be television properties, theme park rides and spin-off films all centered around the new trilogy that Abrams will oversee.
It's a page borrowed from Disney's exploitation of the Marvel comic books and if it works out, it should make Abrams very rich indeed.

CANNES (Reuters) - Danish filmmaker Lars Von Trier's "Nymphomaniac", one of the most hotly anticipated movies of 2013 for its erotic content and all-star cast, will open in theatres on Christmas Day, the producers said on Thursday.
The provocative director, expelled from the Cannes film festival in 2011 for joking that he sympathized with Hitler, cast Charlotte Gainsbourg as the self-diagnosed nymphomaniac of the title, alongside rising Hollywood star Shia LaBeouf.
Uma Thurman and Willem Dafoe also appear in a movie which, if the pre-release buildup is to be believed, could match Von Trier's ultra-violent "Antichrist" for shocking audiences.
"December is a good month. Besides, what's more Christmassy than a film like this?" joked production company Zentropa's CEO Peter Aalbaek Jensen in a statement.
He added that Von Trier, 57, had just begun editing the second part of what will be a double bill, and promised impressive visual effects.
The film will premiere in Copenhagen in early December with a red carpet gala, and reach cinemas on December 25.
There had been intense speculation that the picture would be ready for this year's Cannes, where director Thierry Fremaux told Reuters Von Trier would be welcomed back in the future despite his ignominious exit two years ago.
It was the first such expulsion from the world's top film festival in 64 years, and an apology from the director, once a darling in Cannes and winner of the Palme d'Or award in 2000 for "Dancer in the Dark", proved too late.

mortgage
Dear Dr. Don,
I got a reverse mortgage on my home, but my wife was not on the loan. I was hoping to add her name through refinancing the reverse mortgage. But, I've called some places and have been told it cannot be done.
The original attorney on the deal made a quick deed, and I don't know what to do. My wife has nowhere else to live if I pass away.
Thanks,
-- Richard Redux
Dear Richard,
Putting your bride on the deed doesn't put her on the mortgage loan. With a reverse mortgage, the loan becomes due when the last person on the loan dies or stops living in the house.
The good news is that reverse mortgages can be refinanced. It can be expensive and may not make financial sense.
The first thing that has to happen with the refinancing is to pay off the existing loan balance, which includes the interest expense to date.
But your goal isn't to find additional funds; it is to get your wife's name on the loan. I'd suggest you look into refinancing with the Federal Housing Administration's Home Equity Conversion Mortgage program.
Another possibility involves life insurance, which could help accomplish your goals. A life insurance policy that lists you as the insured and your wife listed as the beneficiary could pay off the reverse mortgage if you die.
It won't be cheap, but neither are closing costs on a new reverse mortgage.

Dear Prudence,
I am the middle of three boys and we are all in our 20s. Our parents separated shortly after my younger brother was born and eventually they went through a bitter divorce. Recently, my father, brothers, and I went to a camping-style family wedding together. The facilities were spartan and we all ended up in a communal shower. I'm sure this was the first time all four of us were naked together, and it was certainly the first time I'd seen my younger brother naked since he was little. In the shower, there was a definite "one of these things is not like the other" moment. While my older brother, dad, and myself have fairly similar, if modest, endowments, my younger brother's male parts were noticeably different (and "better") than ours in almost every way possible: size, shape, even complexion (!). It was like seeing a great white whale breaching alongside dolphins. None of us look strikingly like our parents, but we are clearly brothers, except for this newly discovered alien appendage on my younger brother. At the reception, my older brother brought this up to me immediately, and we worked out the theory that mom had an affair that gave rise to my baby brother, and his decidedly different genitalia, and the divorce. I don't think full brothers could have such variation, and the fact that my younger brother's package is a definite upgrade plays into the theory that maybe mom was shopping around for a better deal. We'd really like to get to the bottom of this, but we're not sure how to broach this already difficult topic with either parent when our only evidence consists of this sensitive observation.
Dear No,
It?s the Johnson brothers, Willie, Peter, and Rod! You and your brother got quite an eyeful of baby bro?s one-eyed wonder. I wish I knew what you meant by the superior ?complexion? of your brother?s endowment. I?m just supposing that his Moby-Dick gives off a rosy glow due to excess blood flow. There are several ways to approach your central question: Did your mother give your father the shaft? First of all, you seem to be of the opinion that sexual characteristics are inherited only from the parent of the same sex. But as this website points out, genital size, like eye color and height, are traits inherited from both parents. It?s perfectly possible that your mother comes from a family of three-legged men and you and your older brother got the short end of that genetic lottery. You have one ambiguous (though substantial) piece of evidence for your theory that your parents? divorce was due to your mother?s infidelity. But maybe your mother discovered that while she was gestating your father?s third son, he was the one cheating on her. Despite the nastiness of your parents? parting, they have kept the reason quiet all these years. Since all of you boys appear to have been happily incurious about their split these many years, it?s probably a good idea to remain that way. You want to establish that your baby brother isn?t really a member of the tribe. But pursuing your hunch will only make a cock-up of things because nothing can change the fact that your father has always embraced all of you as his three sons.
Dear Prudence Live in New York: Preschool Scam
Dear Prudence,
A while ago while searching for a book in my mother's office I came across her will, and though I know I shouldn't have looked, I did. I have been struggling with what I discovered ever since. My stepfather is slightly younger and significantly healthier than my mother, and if she dies before he does, he and my half sister?their child?are her sole beneficiaries. If my stepfather dies first, then my half sister will get half of my mother?s estate with the other half divided between my full brother and me. I?m married, financially stable, and have a successful career. I don't care about the money, but I can't shake my sadness about my mother's choice not to provide anything, not even of sentimental value, for my brother and me should she pass away before her husband. I adore my half sister (who is significantly younger than I am) and my stepfather and begrudge them nothing, but I find myself resenting my mother. I've always felt like her least favorite child, especially compared to my half sister. I don't want to be bitter toward my mother and I was hoping my sadness about this would go away, but it continues to fester and remind me of how she's never been as proud of or kind to me as to her other children. Should I bring it up with her to clear the air? Or should I just keep trying to get over it? I'm ashamed of having peeked at her will and I'm skeptical that a conversation with her about it would go over well.
Dear Eldest,
Good for you for not even being slightly tempted to suggest your stepfather attend the running of the bulls on his summer vacation, or take up BASE jumping as a hobby. I also admire your ability to separate your feelings about your mother from the objects of her affection?her husband and their daughter?and not take your perfectly understandable resentment out on them. Unless one child is absolutely rolling in dough, or another child has special needs, I don?t like beyond-the-grave social engineering and favor equal inheritance among siblings. Parents should remember that once they?re gone it?s always possible that the successful child suffers a health or financial reversal, while the lost soul ends up selling an app to Facebook. Siblings understand there is no such thing as absolute parental equality: What they are looking for is fairness. It?s a big failing for a parent to leave her children feeling inequitably loved, and a terrible parting gift to leave festering resentment. But I?m also going to suggest you consider the information you stealthily obtained in a different context. If may be that your mother is relieved, proud, and happy that you and your brother have done so well and are set. Perhaps what you see as greater attention to your half sister is largely a function of her being younger and less grounded. If your father has amassed an estate, perhaps your mother is also assuming that you and your brother will inherent substantially from him. And you don?t know if there are other documents suggesting her three children divide her memorabilia as they see fit. I agree with you that it will not go well to have a conversation with your mother about her will. But it?s perfectly legitimate if you want to talk to her about your lifelong sense of being less appreciated than your siblings. First bounce this off your husband or a good friend to strategize over what could come from disinterring such feelings.

May 15, 2013 ? Twenty percent of American males and 10 percent of American females will experience a kidney stone at some point in their lifetime. Often, these patients will be advised to drink more fluids as a way to prevent future stone formation. Now, new research from Brigham and Women's Hospital finds that some beverages may be more helpful than others when it comes to preventing recurrent kidney stones.
In a study published online May 15, 2013 in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN), researchers report that the consumption of sugar sweetened soda and punch is associated with a higher risk of stone formation.
"Our study found that the relation between fluid intake and kidney stones may be dependent on the type of beverage consumed," explained Gary Curhan, MD, ScD, a physician in the Channing Division of Network Medicine at BWH and senior author of this study. "We found that higher consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks was associated with a higher incidence of kidney stones."
The researchers analyzed data from three ongoing cohorts, the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study (HPFS), and both the Nurses' Health Study I (NHS I) and II (NHS II). The total analysis involved 194,095 participants over a median follow-up of more than 8 years. Participants in all the three cohorts had been asked to complete biennial questionnaires with information on medical history, lifestyle, and medication. Questions on diet were updated every four years. They found that participants who consumed one or more sugar-sweetened cola servings per day had a 23 percent higher risk of developing kidney stones compared with those participants consuming less than one serving per week. This was true for consuming sugar-sweetened non cola as well, such as punch. They also found that some beverages, such as coffee, tea and orange juice, were associated with a lower risk of stone formation.
"Our prospective study confirms that some beverages are associated with a lower risk of kidney stone formation, whereas others are associated with a higher risk," explained Pietro Manuel Ferraro, MD, a physician at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Rome and corresponding author of this study. "Although higher total fluid intake reduces the risk of stone formation, this information about individual beverages may be useful for general practitioners seeking to implement strategies to reduce stone formation in their patients."
