Pennsylvania: Governor in the hole at half-time; NCAA Penn State sanctions too harsh, voters say

January 29, 2013 - Pennsylvania Gov In The Hole At Half-Time, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; NCAA Penn State Sanctions Too Harsh, Voters Say
Word format

With a big thumbs down from women and a lackluster rating from Republicans, Pennsylvania voters disapprove 42 - 36 percent of the job Gov. Tom Corbett is doing, putting him in the hole half-way through his first term, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

This is down from a 40 - 38 percent approval rating in a November 15 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University. There is a large gender gap in today's results, as women disapprove 45 - 31 percent while men approve 41 - 37 percent. Republicans approve by a lukewarm 52 - 25 percent. Disapproval is 57 - 24 percent among Democrats and 39 - 36 percent among independent voters. There is no strong base of support for Gov. Corbett among any income or age group or in any region of the state. The governor does not deserve to be reelected, Pennsylvania voters say 51 - 31 percent, including 54 - 24 percent among women and 48 - 38 percent among men. Only 49 percent of Republicans say Corbett deserves to be reelected. "It's halftime in Gov. Tom Corbett's first term and if he were running a football team instead of a state, he'd fire his offensive coordinator," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Gov. Corbett has hit the 50 percent approval rating only once so far, mainly because of his bad grades from women." Pennsylvania voters disapprove 50 - 26 percent of the way Corbett has handled the Penn State situation over the last few years Voters in households where someone attends or has graduated from Penn State disapprove 59 - 23 percent. There is no measurable gender gap on this question as no group approves of Corbett's handling of this issue. Voters do approve 43 - 37 percent of Corbett's lawsuit challenging the NCAA sanctions against Penn State. Men approve 51 - 35 percent while women are divided with 37 percent approving and 39 percent disapproving. By a 43 - 29 percent margin, Pennsylvania voters have a favorable opinion of the late Joe Paterno, with a 47 - 28 percent favorability among men and a 40 - 30 percent favorability among women. Paterno's favorability is 54 - 27 percent among voters in Penn State households. The NCAA sanctions imposed on Penn State for its handling of the Sandusky scandal are too severe, 53 percent of Pennsylvania voters say, while 13 percent say they are not severe enough and 28 percent say they are appropriate. Calling the sanctions too severe are 58 percent of men, 48 percent of women and 64 percent of voters in Penn State households. In an August 2 survey by Quinnipiac University, 46 percent called the sanctions too severe, with 12 percent saying not severe enough and 36 percent saying they are appropriate. "Voters disapprove of the way Gov. Corbett has handled the Jerry Sandusky scandal at Penn State over the last few years, but support Corbett's lawsuit targeting the NCAA for what they believe are too-harsh sanctions of the University," Malloy said. Pennsylvania's U.S. Senators get only modest approval ratings, 44 - 36 percent for Sen. Robert Casey Jr. and 43 - 25 percent for Sen. Pat Toomey. A total of 55 percent of voters are "somewhat dissatisfied" or "very dissatisfied" with life in the Keystone State, while 45 percent are "very satisfied" or "somewhat satisfied." From January 22 - 27, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,221 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia and the nation as a public service and for research. Tara Stiles: Totally Enlightened!

Totally Enlightened! is a story of two BFFs trying to find inner peace in all the wrong places. I wrote this as a short film about 10 years ago when I moved to NYC and started dipping my toes in all the different yoga and spiritual communities that were hanging around, and I observed quite a few comedic moments in the process. What fun is life if it's taken so seriously, and what fun is yoga and the search for enlightenment if we are tight, tense, and clenched up from the inside out? The moral is what you make of it. My intention is to remind us all that the guru is within, and our intention will guide the way, whether we are sipping expensive organic tea blessed by a monk or not. Enjoy!

Big thanks to Demand Media, and all the Hollywood pros and NYC friends and Strala regulars who made this possible.

SnapPea

SnapPea is billed as "Android's best friend," and after spending significant time with application I am inclined to agree?somewhat. The free utility lets Android users manage photos, music, video, contacts, and apps from the comfort of their computers. SnapPea is a useful tool, but a few niggles prevent it and my Samsung Galaxy Note II??from being, like, total BFFs.

Getting Started
SnapPea, in a nutshell, is iTunes?for Android?minus the bloat. You start by downloading SnapPea to your Windows PC and the corresponding mobile app to your Android device. There are two setup methods: You can connect your Android phone or tablet to a laptop via USB (and download the appropriate drivers), or connect via Wi-Fi. The latter option requires a small but easy amount of setup. Step one: Make sure that the laptop and Android device are connected to the same wireless signal. Step two: Launch the SnapPea mobile app and key in the displayed passcode into the SnapPea desktop app when prompted. That's it! Note: Part of SnapPea's music functionality is gimped when used over Wi-Fi. More on that later.

SnapPea then asks to you link the two devices. It's optional, but there are advantages for doing so. The app auto-connects desktop to mobile and performs automatic contact, photo, and text message backup. It's useful and I'd recommend it to all users?unless you're running the software on a public computer.

The SnapPea Experience
The SnapPea home screen has two areas. There's a large, main content area that occupies most of the screen and a column that houses the My Device and Download top-level categories.

My Devices is where you manage content and, thankfully, the interface is clean and intuitive. Clicking Apps, for example, lets you move software from internal storage to a SD card (and vice versa), export Android apps to your computer, import Android apps, delete apps, and install apps from Google Play. You can perform similar functions with Contacts, Music, Video, Pictures, and Messages content, but each category has its own unique features.

For example, Messages lets you read text messages in a layout that very much resembles an IM chat session. It's incredibly useful for people who have large mitts (like me) as I can craft messages on a large, spacious computer keyboard. I liked it a lot, but SnapPea took nearly a minute to send some of my texts?frustrating. Photos can be viewed as individual pictures or in slideshow format, but SnapPea only displays images snapped with your Android device or sent to you via text; photos saved from email aren't shown. On the music front, SnapPea allows you to import music from your desktop into to your phone. Liam Finn + Eliza June's "Honest Face" song transferred from my laptop to my Samsung Galaxy Note II in under a minute. SnapPea also lets you import music from iTunes, but only if your Android device is connected to the computer via USB.

The Download section is where you can download content from a variety of sources. There's the obligatory Google Play section, but you can also download content from the likes of Pinterest, YouTube, and Ted Talks (you can also stream video to the desktop). There are sections for Android-related sites such as Android Central and Phandroid, too.

Is it for You?
SnapPea makes managing Android content a breeze. The software is incredibly simple to use and gives users a central location for handling Android-related tasks. If you own an Android phone or tablet, consider SnapPea a worthwhile download.

The Rise of the Financial Downturn: Contributing Factors ...

Guest post from personal injury lawyers.

While most businesses are hit hard by the economic crisis, the claims market actually thrives during a financial downturn. Although many experts grumble about the compensation culture, statistics show that economic booms correlate with fewer personal injury claims. So why are people calling up their lawyers so readily during a recession?

Redundancies

With more than 1.3 million people losing their jobs by 2010, due to the economic downturn, and employment opportunities few and far between, those who?d been made redundant seemed more likely to file a claim. Why?

While under employment, staff can be concerned about losing their job, if they make a personal injury claim. Even though this rarely happens ? and if it did, you could take your employers to court over unfair dismissal ? employees seem to be hesitant about collecting compensation. However, when made redundant, there?s no loyalty left to the business, and people seem to be more comfortable about making a claim.

There?s also a large window of opportunity to contact a solicitor, as you can make your claim up to three years after the incident occurred. With increasing numbers of people fired or made redundant, the personal injury claim figures have likewise grown.

Business Negligence

Homes and corporations alike are suffering from severe expenditure cutbacks. Businesses are having to make-do with spartan levels of staff and resources.

With employees rushed off their feet, quality of service can be jeopardised, such as in the NHS, where nurses are thin on the ground due to ?reforms? ? medical negligence can then occur, purely because the staff-to-patient ratio is inequitable, leading to an increased amount of complaints.

Health and safety, as well as training, can be affected, and stress levels can go through the roof, leading to medical problems.

Rise Of the ?No Win No Fee?

From personal injury claims in Liverpool to medical negligence complaints in London, ?no win no fee? solicitors are making it easier than ever to file a personal injury claim. With court fees being what they are, the claimant now has the security of knowing that they?ll only have to pay-up, if they win their case. Equally, solicitors are likely to give it their all, as the only way that their company makes a profit is if they win!

Poor Financial Situation

Thanks to the recession, most UK citizens are in a worse financial position than before. When your bank balance is in dire straits, making a claim will be more attractive, if that means you can lift your family above the bread line or afford a much-needed holiday. In a pinch, the possibility of money is a compelling incentive to contact a solicitor.

California family missing after trip to Mexico

By Sharon Bernstein, NBCLosAngeles.com

Three members of a Southern California family have been missing for nearly a month after taking a trip to Mexico, loved ones say.

Roberto Mu?oz, his wife Cecilia, and their grandson Armando Salinas, had gone to Mexico to visit relatives over the holidays. But just as the three were beginning their trip home, family members lost contact with them.

Relative Delphina Layton said the family had reached out to the U.S. Embassy and the FBI, to no avail.

More news from NBCLosAngeles.com

Cellphones belonging to the missing group appear to have been turned off, and border records show that they never crossed back into the United States, she said.

Mexico's drug war is also part of a drug culture with roots in music, movies and even religion

Layton expressed frustration with the pace of the investigation.

?I need returned calls,? she said. ?Somebody get back to me and tell me that you?re doing something.?

A Palm Springs, Calif., television station reported that the family had been traveling through Chihuahua, Mexico, and passing through the rough border town of Ciudad Juarez. U.S. relatives were reported to be living in the Coachella Valley, northeast of San Diego.

Randy Travis to enter drunken-driving plea

SHERMAN, Texas (AP) ? Country music star Randy Travis is expected to enter a guilty plea this week in a drunken-driving case in North Texas, where he was arrested over the summer naked after crashing his Pontiac Trans Am.

Details of the plea agreement will be released following Travis' court appearance Thursday in Sherman, Grayson County District Attorney Joe Brown said Monday. He said the singer will plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge that is punishable by up to two years in jail and a $4,000 fine.

His defense attorney, John Nix, said a sentence of probation is expected and that Travis is "looking forward to putting this behind him and moving on."

Authorities have said a Trans Am registered to the 53-year-old singer veered off a roadway near Tioga, a town about 60 miles north of Dallas where the entertainer lives, and struck several barricades in a construction zone the night of Aug. 7. Investigators said Travis was found naked and combative at the scene, and his blood-alcohol level was more than 0.15. The legal limit for driving is 0.08.

He walked out of jail the next morning wearing scrubs, no shoes and a University of Texas baseball cap.

Travis also had faced a charge of retaliation for allegedly threatening officers, but that charge is no longer on file with the court.

Travis' lawyers have previously said the singer has a great deal of respect for law enforcement and has stopped drinking alcohol.

The August accident was among a string of recent run-ins with the law for Travis.

Police in suburban Dallas cited Travis following an Aug. 23 incident in a church parking lot in which he allegedly intervened in an argument involving a woman he knows and her estranged husband. Nobody was hurt. He pleaded not guilty to simple assault in that matter and has a jury trial scheduled for March.

Travis also was arrested last February in Denton County, northwest of Dallas, for public intoxication. That case is no longer on file with the county court and appears to have been dismissed.

US economy gets lift from housing, other tailwinds

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The U.S. economy is a study in contrasts.

The housing, banking and auto industries are surging back to health and that has helped push the stock market to a five-year peak. Higher prices for homes and stocks tend to make people feel wealthier and spend more.

Yet unemployment remains high and hiring modest. The end of a Social Security tax cut is shrinking already flat pay. Federal budget fights have put businesses and consumers on edge.

Balanced between those tailwinds and headwinds, the economy is struggling to accelerate. By the end of this year, though, many analysts think the tailwinds will succeed in boosting growth and fueling a more robust economy in 2014.

"There is some underlying momentum," says Paul Edelstein, U.S. economist at IHS Global Insight. "It's not as strong as we would like, but it's there and it's building."

Uncertainty about government spending cuts could be defused by summer, and any spending cuts that do take effect will likely be phased in over several years. Also, for the first time since the recession ended 3? years ago, several key areas of the economy are simultaneously driving growth, which means the strength is more broadly based:

? HOUSING

The nation has finally worked off the excesses of the housing bubble. Once there were too many homes for sale; now, there are too few to meet demand. That is pushing up home prices, construction and hiring ? trends that could accelerate U.S. economic growth in 2013 by a full percentage point, economists say.

Home prices rose 7.4 percent in the 12 months that ended in November, according to CoreLogic. It was the largest 12-month gain in six years.

Housing starts will reach 970,000 this year, according to Patrick Newport, an economist at IHS, a 24 percent jump from 2012. That's far above the 554,000 homes started in 2009 after the housing bust, though still below the roughly 1.5 million associated with a healthy market.

Construction companies will add 140,000 jobs this year, Newport forecasts, up from a scant 18,000 last year.

? AUTOS

Struggling consumers put off car purchases for years. Now, pent-up demand is being released: Sales reached a 5-year high of 14.5 million last year. Analysts expect sales to reach 15.5 million this year, though still short of the recent peak of around 17 million in 2005.

Production and hiring at automakers and their suppliers are increasing as a result. The auto industry added 52,000 jobs last year, the third annual gain after a decade of declines.

? BANKING

The financial crisis hammered banks and choked off loans to businesses and consumers. But lending has been rebounding.

Mortgage and auto loans are rising. Commercial and industrial loans rose 2.2 percent in the July-September quarter from the same period a year earlier. Bank profits reached their highest level in six years that same quarter, according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Bank of America boosted the value of its mortgage loans 33 percent in the October-December quarter compared with a year earlier.

? STOCK MARKET

The Standard and Poor's 500 stock index has more than doubled from its low in 2009 and is just 4 percent shy of its record high set in 2007.

The S&P index has jumped 5.4 percent this month in response to healthy news on housing and corporate profits. The sidestepping of the fiscal cliff at the start of the year helped, too. Higher stock prices are boosting Americans' wealth, providing more fuel for spending and growth.

Stocks are getting a lift from Main Street investors for a change. In a reverse from their behavior for most of the past five years, small investors are buying more stocks instead of selling them. Investors put nearly $13 billion into U.S. stock mutual funds in the first two weeks of 2013, according to the Investment Company Institute, a trade group for funds.

In another sign of rising confidence, investors are shifting out of ultra-safe investments such as U.S. Treasurys. The interest rate, or yield, on the benchmark 10-year Treasury bond topped 2 percent on Monday for the first time since April. Bond yields rise when their prices fall.

___

In the short term, the economy's headwinds are still restraining growth. They include:

? BUDGET FIGHTS

The heaviest millstone weighing down the economy is the rift between President Barack Obama and Republicans over taxes and spending.

Further talks are expected this spring as several deadlines arrive: Across-the-board spending cuts are set to kick in March 1. Financing to run the government will expire by March 27, raising the threat of a government shutdown. And the federal borrowing cap must be raised by May 18 or the government could default on its debt.

Haziness around future tax and budget policy may already be restraining growth. A report from the Federal Reserve last week suggested that some employers delayed hiring late last year because of uncertainty over the fiscal cliff.

? SLUGGISH HIRING

Job gains have held steady for the past two years at about 150,000 a month. That's only about enough to slowly reduce the unemployment rate, now at 7.8 percent.

Even in sectors that are recovering, many companies aren't yet adding jobs. Some are even cutting, especially in financial services. Bank of America, for example, has shed about 15,000 jobs in the past year.

In a robust recovery, monthly job gains are usually 250,000 or more. That's what it would take to rapidly reduce unemployment and force employers to raise pay to attract workers.

? FEW PAY RAISES

For now, high unemployment is limiting pay. When employers have lots of job applicants to choose from, they have little incentive to give raises.

Hourly wages rose just 2.1 percent last year, only slightly above consumer inflation, which was 1.7 percent. Consumer spending, which drives about 70 percent of the economy, can't improve much until pay or job growth accelerates. Americans still are still reluctant to run up credit card debt to pay for extra consumption.

A temporary Social Security tax cut expired this year, reducing Americans' take-home pay. It will cost a typical household making $50,000 a year about $1,000. A household with two high-paid workers will lose up to $4,500. The drop in pay could slow consumer spending.

The Social Security tax cut, in place for two years, was allowed to expire in the deal reached between the White House and Congress to avoid the fiscal cliff.

___

Most economists expect the higher Social Security tax to bite hardest in the first three months of the year. But after Americans adjust to the sudden cut, its impact should lessen over time.

If federal budget issues can be resolved, the economy could start to accelerate. Analysts forecast only modest growth this year of about 2 percent. But they think growth will strengthen as the year goes on.

JPMorgan Chase, for example, forecasts that the economy will grow at an anemic annual rate of just 1 percent in the January-March quarter. But as the drag from higher taxes fades and the debt ceiling is resolved, growth could pick up to a decent 3 percent pace by the October-December quarter.

Diane Swonk, chief economist at Mesirow Financial, expects housing and other tailwinds to accelerate growth this year ? as long as budget "shenanigans" don't dampen consumer and business confidence as they did in 2011.

"Could we get 3.5 percent growth by the end of this year?" she asks. "If we can get over this budget stuff, absolutely."

A 'Rotten Twinkie' Is For Sale On eBay (PHOTO)

A popular urban legend purports that Twinkies never rot. But one eBay user supposedly has evidence to refute this claim.

Seller high_order1 is auctioning off what appears to be a rotten Hostess Twinkie at a starting bid of $25, plus $10 for shipping.

Scroll down to see a photo of the Twinkie.

"I really did believe that these things and cockroaches would be the only thing to survive a nuclear war, but I was wrong," the seller writes in a somewhat lengthy description of what he says is a "scientific and historical curiosity."

In fact, Twinkies do spoil and have a shelf life of about 25 days, the Washington Post reported. This may come as unwelcome news to Twinkie loyalists who stocked up on the desserts after Hostess Brands announced it was going out of business in November.

It's unlikely, however, that Twinkies will go extinct. According to the Washington Post, 11 companies have submitted bids to buy the Hostess cake brands. The owner of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer is reportedly going to bid on the maker of Twinkies, according to Time.

A recent report also revealed that McKee Foods Corp. may acquire the Drake's brand from Hostess for $25 million to $30 million. Earlier this month, Flowers Foods Inc. placed a bid to buy a number of Hostess's brands, including the iconic Wonder Bread, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The "rotten Twinkie" is for sale on eBay until January 30. As of this writing, no bids have been placed. If you decide to buy the Twinkie, please do let us know.

Congo deal delayed at African Union meeting

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) ? United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon says an agreement to end violence in Congo was delayed over "procedural issues."

Speaking at the African Union summit in Ethiopia, Ban told a news conference Monday that there are no fundamental differences holding back the agreement. A signing ceremony scheduled for Monday was canceled.

The peace deal is an effort at a large-scale political framework to end violence in Congo. Separate talks are taking place in Uganda between the rebel group known as M23 and Congolese officials. Jean Baptiste Rudaseswa, a lawyer for M23, said he was happy Ban's peace plan has so far failed because he said it risked destabilizing Congo further.

Ban said the U.N. is looking at establishing a "peace enforcement capacity" as part of the U.N. peacekeeping force in Congo.

A Commercial Business Loan In Canada . Business Loans ? Want ...

A commercial business loan in Canada. The ability to successfully achieve the financing the Canadian business owner or manager needs clearly eliminates a lot of the worrying around your busines success.

In the case of Canada we're in a lot better shape these days than we were a few years ago. Even start ups seem to be able to get financed again!

In Canada those loans are going to come from Canadian commercial banks or non regulated commercial and alternative lenders. When we say non regulated basically we are saying ' they are not banks!"...simple as that.

Its commercial business loans that solve both survival and growth needs. Those loans cover equipment, real estate, working capital, and even acquisitions. What's important is to start the whole process even a bit before you need the financing - searching for financing in crisis mode is highly NOT recommended. That pretty well goes for line of credit facilities, which in many cases are what the business owner/manager still associates with a ' loan '.

That does though bring us to the point that it's important to understand that there is a huge difference in either term loans as opposed to monetizing current assets for cash flow - it the ' business line of credit'. It's therefore important to think of your business loans in terms of strategically acquiring financing.

So what can in fact term business loans be used for in Canada? A variety of assets can be financed- up to and including the corporate jet. (Well we can dream can't we?!) . But typical assets financed under loans include computers, telecom assets, software, machinery, equipment, and even leasehold improvements. A great tip we can offer clients is that leaseholds up to 350,000.00 can in fact be financed at great rates, terms and structures under the Govt. SBL Business loan. Check out this loan program if you have revenues under 5 Million dollars per annum, which is the revenue cap of companies allowed to apply under the program.

At the outset of a business loan have a strong sense of the term of the loan. That is going to play into the lenders cash flow analysis, and at the same time you want to be able to match the term of the loan with the useful economic life of the asset. That same tip goes for lease financing those assets also by the way.

Bridge loans are offered by alternative and other lenders as a way of acquiring assets you normally might not be able to finance through a bank. In some cases you might even be exploring a sale leaseback to generate cash flow out of assets already owned. When it makes sense, key word ' makes sense '! that's a great way to generate cash flow. Remember also that you will need to have a strong sense of market and liquidation value when it comes to financing pre- owned or used assets. That's a critical part of the lender equation.

One final tip we always talk to clients about is the concept of ' matching'. Simply speaking it means ensuring that you financing long term assets with long term financing vehicles such as a business loan. To put it more simply, don't finance that corporate jet out of the line of credit

In Canada business loans come from banks, leasing companies and asset based lenders. Seek out and speak to a trusted, credible and experienced Canadian business financing advisor who can assist you with you commercial business loan needs.

Lengthy 787 probe, fixing problem, may cost Boeing dear

SEATTLE (Reuters) - The slow progress of investigations into battery problems on Boeing Co's 787 Dreamliner jets suggest the new plane could be grounded for months, raising fears that the financial hit to Boeing will be greater than had been initially predicted.

Wall Street had been working on the assumption that safety inspectors would find the root cause of two battery incidents in the United States and Japan within weeks and Boeing would implement a speedy fix costing no more than a few hundred million dollars.

But on Thursday, the head of the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board said it was only "early" in its investigation of a fire on a Japan Airlines Co Ltd jet in Boston on January 7, while Japanese aviation authorities appear no closer to resolving a battery problem that caused an emergency landing of a domestic All Nippon Airways Co Ltd flight last week.

"Saying we are in the early stages of the investigation sent a resounding message to those who thought this was a quick fix," said Carter Leake, aerospace analyst at BB&T Capital Markets.

"If it comes out that ultimately it's a six-month issue or a nine-month issue, everything changes. All of this optimism and all of this costing assumption, starts to become bigger numbers. Once you get past six months, you have to consider cancellations."

Investors do not appear to be in a panic yet. Boeing shares are down only about 2.5 percent since the 787 was grounded worldwide following the emergency landing in Japan on January 16.

"Wall Street reaction shows confidence in Boeing's ability to solve the 787 problem," said Michel Merluzeau, managing partner at G2 Solutions, an aerospace and defense consulting firm in Kirkland, Washington.

Boeing does make four other kinds of jets, including the best-selling 737, and the company earns 40 percent of its revenue from its defense arm.

Still, the world's biggest planemaker is producing 787s, but not delivering any, a situation that could stretch the company financially and test investors' faith.

"One of our big concerns is that this investigation continues to drag on, and it looks like it may be more than just the battery overheating itself," said Russell Solomon, an analyst at Moody's Investors Service. "You start getting into three, six months out and it has a bigger impact and my guess is that they (Boeing) would have to potentially cut the production rate."

BREAKING DOWN THE COST

Besides the actual cost of fixing the 50 787s in service, plus another 50 or so in production or waiting for delivery, Boeing will have to compensate carriers unable to use 787s as planned and pay penalties for late deliveries, most likely in the form of discounts on future purchases.

It also is not clear whether any fix - particularly if the probes lead to the identification of a major design fault - would also be costly.

At the same time, it will be starved of the cash it was expecting for delivering 787s it is still producing at the current rate of five per month, which could add up to $300 million per month, analysts estimate.

And the longer the planes are grounded, the more Boeing is exposed, as airlines may start to reconsider orders and - in extreme cases - cancel some, especially if the battery fix adds weight to the plane and reduces its vaunted fuel efficiency.

Boeing, which is expected to report a drop in fourth-quarter earnings next Wednesday, is not talking specifically about costs of the 787 issue yet.

"It's too early to know the financial effects," said Boeing spokesman Charles Bickers. "We're focused on working through the process, getting to a resolution and returning the airplanes to service."

Douglas Harned, an analyst at Bernstein Research, puts the cost of a fix at no more than $350 million, or about 30 cents per Boeing share, in a worst-case scenario. Howard Rubel at Jefferies estimates the cost at somewhere between $250 million to $625 million, but notes that some of the cost may be borne by suppliers.

"There's still the hope of a relatively easy fix followed by a return to service within a week or two, but there's also the strong and growing risk that they'll need to redesign the battery system, which could mean another six to nine months," said Richard Aboulafia, an analyst at aerospace research firm Teal Group.

PRODUCTION DELAY LOOMS

More important is the effect on Boeing's production rate, which is scheduled to jump to 10 a month by the end of this year, from five now.

That jump is crucial to Boeing's plans to eventually make a profit on the 787. Most of the investment in a new plane occurs early in the program, which means earlier planes cost more to build than later ones.

The quicker Boeing can refine the process and ramp up numbers of planes produced, the quicker it will reach the target of 1,100 planes, where it calculates it will break even on the program. At planned production rates that would take about a decade.

If Boeing makes fewer planes than it has budgeted for and is not getting cash in the door for deliveries, that could add up to more than $1 billion per month in "incremental working capital spend," according to Solomon at Moody's.

With $6 billion of cash on its balance sheet at the end of the third quarter, Boeing looks strong enough to deal with that, but the longer it goes on, the more the worries mount, said Solomon.

"If a billion to a billion and a half of incremental working capital consumption is the right number in terms of cash burn every month, you start getting into three, six months out and it has a bigger impact," he said. "My guess is that they would have to potentially cut the production rate if that were the case."

Cutting production of 787s, or halting it altogether, would be a huge blow for a plane program that is already three years behind schedule.

"The market really only cares about one thing right now and that is, will production change?" said Leake at BB&T. "I believe it will not, Boeing can't afford to do that. It's too expensive to ramp down and ramp up again."

Production delays would ripple down the supply chain, could cost jobs and could even mean the loss of future orders if airlines lose patience with Boeing.

Rubel at Jefferies said this is unlikely, but in the worst case scenario could result in a $5 billion write-off for Boeing, if it loses orders it was counting on to offset expenses it has already laid out in building the 787.

That would take its toll on earnings and likely mean taking a provision against those losses.

"It will impact equity investors," said Solomon at Moody's. "The company will grow much more slowly if they can't ramp to 10 a month and the program is not successful."

Xolo A500 debuts in India with Android 4.0

Mobile Miscellany week of January 21st, 2013

A new Android 4.0 smartphone known as the Xolo A500 became available within India this week, and from all appearances, it's entirely run of the mill. That said, with a price of ?6,999 ($130), it may just turn a few heads. The Xolo A500 sports a 4-inch WVGA (800 x 480) display, along with a dual-core 1GHz CPU (Snapdragon S4 Play) and dual-SIM functionality. AT&T CEO reveals interest in smartphone financing

Mobile Miscellany week of January 21st, 2013

Verizon's Lowell McAdam now has some company. During this week's earnings call, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson revealed that AT&T is similarly monitoring T-Mobile's shift to drop the subsidized business model and instead provide customers the ability to finance their new smartphone purchase. While Stephenson may lack grace with his words, the intent is clear: "We expect there to be some dynamics in the marketplace that -- and we'll have to respond to some of it -- we find interesting, like the handset financing that they're doing." Curiously, Stephenson admitted that AT&T has considered the approach in the past, but like Verizon, much of how his company responds will depend on consumers' reception of T-Mobile's new approach. US Cellular now offers carrier billing for online shopping

Mobile Miscellany week of January 21st, 2013

US Cellular announced this week that it now supports carrier billing for online purchases. The system was launched in partnership with Boku, and subscribers may pay for goods at participating merchants by entering their mobile number at checkout and then confirming the purchase with a text message. From there, customers will find the total amount of the purchase added to their wireless bill. [PhoneScoop]

AT&T working to integrate Data Sense for Windows Phone 8

Data Sense is one of the more unique features of Windows Phone 8, which allows users to monitor their data usage and squeeze more from their data plan through the magic of server-side compression. Verizon is the only carrier to support the feature within the US, but that may soon change, as AT&T has revealed that it's "exploring Data Sense and how to optimize the experience" for its subscribers. About damn time, right? [FierceWireless]

HTC forces shutdown of custom ROM site

Mobile Miscellany week of January 21st, 2013

A provider of many popular Sense-based ROMs is no more. This week, HTCRUU closed its doors and took its repositories offline in acquiescence to legal threats from HTC. Historically, HTC has taken an admirably lax approach to distribution of customized Sense ROMs, which are popular among enthusiasts of the company's smartphones. Naturally, many other sources exist for custom Sense blends, which raises the question of whether this move was but a one-off showing of legal force, or whether HTC will take a more active approach to ending the underground custom ROM community. Those interested can learn more of the situation on Reddit. [Android Police]

Oil posts slight loss; gasoline up to $3.33

The price of oil fell slightly Friday as a report showing a cooling off in new home sales offset the positive influence of ebullient U.S. stock markets.

Benchmark oil fell 7 cents to close at $95.88 in trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It ended the week with a gain of 32 cents.

The Commerce Department said new-home sales fell 7.3 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 369,000. That's down from November's rate, which was the fastest in 2 ? years. Still, sales for the entire year were the best since 2009.

Oil prices are being supported by investors' confident mood, reflected by rising indexes in global stock markets and gains by the euro against the dollar.

A weaker dollar makes crude cheaper ? and a more attractive investment ? for traders using other currencies. On Friday, the euro was up at $1.3458 from $1.3378 late Thursday in New York.

A batch of mostly positive earnings reports from Corporate America buoyed U.S. stock markets. The S&P 500 broke through 1,500 Thursday for the first time since December 2007 and lingered above that milestone on Friday. European stocks posted strong gains as well.

In the U.S., the average price for a gallon of gas rose a penny to $3.33, up 4 cents from a week ago. Although the price of oil moved little this week, it did rise more than $4 in the year's first three weeks, and that increase is starting to show up at the gas pump.

Brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, ended flat at $113.28 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline rose 1 cent to finish at $2.88 per gallon.

? Natural gas ended unchanged at $3.44 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Heating oil fell 3 cents to finish at $3.06 a gallon.

First Person: Women in combat? They already are

The Pentagon is lifting its ban on women officially serving in combat. Yahoo News asked female military veterans to react to the decision. Here's one perspective.

COMMENTARY | Women have been in combat roles for a long time. What is being done now is to recognize a long-accomplished fact. Complaints about this recognition betray the complainers as ill-informed or ungrateful to the women who have already taken the ultimate risk.

I served in the USCG in the 1970s, engaged in Cold War operations against the Soviets and eastern bloc fleets in the North Atlantic. I went to sea on a 210' medium endurance cutter engaged in ELT duties in the North Atlantic.

The USCG was engaged in direct contact with Soviet and eastern bloc fleets. We boarded and inspected their huge 500- to 600-foot factory-trawler spy ships. The USCG had men and women alike performing all duties.

I was a QM2 at the time and stood navigation and radar watches on the bridge. I served as a member of a boarding party that boarded a 600-foot gray and white rust-streaked Soviet factory-trawler spy ship.

Separating from the boarding party, I visited their bridge to inspect the wheelhouse and chart room. Alone with the enemy crew, unarmed, I located their spy shack and checked out their navigation gear.

Soviet ships had women on their crews, too. The Soviet women on the factory-trawler spy ship were assigned to crew a ship with a military mission. We took them seriously. The Soviets have a long history of women in combat. Some of their best snipers in WWII were women,

In the 1970s, the Navy publicly discussed crewing combat ships with women. We thought it was comical to see some Navy types raving on about how women were not able to fulfill this role since we already did it. Especially ironic was the fact we trained with the Navy and often bested them in USCG vs. USN war games.
