JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- A national nonprofit program is encouraging military families to sign up for a project in which volunteers shovel their snow at no charge while their loved ones are on active duty.
Project Evergreen's SnowCare for Troops also is looking for volunteers to remove the snow.
A sister program, GreenCare for Troops, was recognized last year by the White House for its service to military families. In that program, volunteers donate their services to take care of the lawns of military families.
The SnowCare project is being underwritten by The Boss snowplow company.
Along with the stress that comes when soldiers leave their families to serve our nation, military spouses are left to manage the household and the additional stress of tackling the daily chores with little support, said Cindy Code, Project EverGreen executive director, in a news release.
"It takes a very special person to give of their time and resources to back up our troops and their families," she said. "We know there are many opportunities to help our military families, and we're pleased to see the positive impact that SnowCare for Troops is having on those who already sacrifice so much."
In addition to removing snow, volunteers can help by enlisting others to volunteer; donating money or gasoline cards to offset snow removal and maintenance costs; and lending snow-removal equipment to volunteers.
There is no local coordinator for the project.
