For Pen Pals, Art Speigelman, Tracy K. Smith, A.S. Byatt slated ...

Pulitzer Prize winners Art Speigelman and Tracy K. Smith and Booker Prize recipient A.S. Byatt will be among guest readers in the 2013-14 Pen Pals season. Joining them will be MacArthur "genius" grant winner George Saunders and Pulitzer finalist Luis Alberto Urrea.

Pen Pals programs, presented by Friends of the Hennepin County Library, are held at Hopkins Center for the Arts, 1111 Mainstreet, Hopkins. Subscriptions for the season, at $160 per person, are on sale by phone at 612-543-8112. Individual tickets at $40 go on sale Aug. 12; pre-sale mail orders are being accepted now and will be placed in the order they are received. Details are at supporthclib.org/events/ pen-pals.

Each guest reader appears at 7:30 p.m. the first day and 11 a.m. the next.

George Saunders, Oct. 10-11: Considered a master of the short story, Saunders' most recent fiction collection, "Tenth of December," has been on the New York Times bestseller list for six months. Time magazine included him in this years' "100 most influential people" list. His appearance is part of the 2012 Twin Cities Book Festival, taking place that weekend.

A.S. Byatt, Nov. 4-5: Distinguished English novelist, poet and critic won the Booker Prize for her novel "Possession: A Romance," made into a film. Winner of dozens of literary honors, she is a Dame of the British Empire.

Luis Alberto Urrea, Feb. 6-7: Tijuana-born storyteller whose

dual-culture experiences influence his writing, including his nonfiction book, "The Devil's Highway," a Pulitzer finalist. His first mystery short story, "Amapola," won the prestigious Edgar Award and more than 30 cities and colleges have chosen his work for community read programs.

Art Speigelman, April 24-25: Artist and illustrator who brought comic books into the realm of literature, won a Pulitzer for his Holocaust narrative "MAUS."

Tracy K. Smith, May 8-9: Smith's most recent poetry collection, "Life on Mars," published by Minneapolis-based Graywolf Press, won a Pulitzer and was a New York Times Notable Book. Her collection "Duende" won the James Laughlin Award from the Academy of American poets and an Essence Literary Award. "The Body's Question" won the 2002 Cave Canem Poetry Prize. -- Mary Ann Grossmann
