Foster Family Adopts Young Boy

BALS? Children?s Law Center was contacted by the care manager of two children in foster care.? The care manager needed an Attorney ad Litem for Devon and his newborn sister, Emma.? Devon?s mother had not seen him since he was born and his father was unknown.? Termination of Parental Rights (TPR) proceedings were just beginning for Devon when his mother was arrested and sentenced to serve time in jail.? A nonrelative friend of Devon and Emma?s mother tried to gain legal custody of the children by claiming to have papers signed by their mother giving the children to the friend.? Devon had lived in a foster home with the same family his whole life and his foster parents desperately wanted to adopt him.? BALS? CLC worked with the Attorney General?s office to persuade the court that Devon and Emma should stay with their foster family and that the nonrelative friend had no claim to the children.? The court ordered that the children remain in the same foster placement.? When Devon and Emma?s mother was released from jail, she failed to appear for the TPR proceedings and the court determined that Devon was free for adoption.? Soon after, Devon was adopted by his foster parents.? His adoptive big brother and big sister were present in the courtroom to welcome him into the family.? Devon?s baby sister, Emma, is scheduled to be adopted by the same foster family in a few months.
