How to Decorate Your Apartment | Home Improvement Power

May 14th, 2011 by Alfred Harrison

There are limitations to living in an apartment or small condo. Since you?re only renting the property, there are certain things you?re not allowed to do. For instance, you may not be able to change the floors, put nail holes in the walls, or change the kitchen countertop. However, there?s no need to be resigned to living in something that?s less than appealing or just plain drab.

It?s common for all the apartments in a specific complex to look exactly the same. They typically have the same flooring or carpet, boring white walls, and bare windows?although you might end up with some white mini-blinds. Fortunately, there are ways to make your look original and reflective of your individual style. Here are some tips on creating appealing apartment interiors.

Decorate Your Walls
It may or may not be possible for you to paint, but it doesn?t hurt to ask. Many apartment managers actually allow painting, since they can easily paint over your color when you move out. If you can paint, create visual impact by painting one wall a bold, bright color. If painting is not possible, then create a focal point by hanging a very large and intricately patterned tapestry on the wall. You may also want to hang some bold colorful prints with a simple mat edge or without a frame at all.

When decorating walls, there are hangers you can purchase for rented spaces. Then you can hang what you like without putting any holes or nails in the walls, which doesn?t always go over well with management.

Add Some Drama to the Floors
Although the carpet and linoleum are in most cases there to stay, you can always incorporate some colorful area rugs into your d?cor. Brightly colored botanical patterns look great in the kitchen. Patterns that include bright sunflowers, daisies, and poppies help break up the monotony and add a cheerful look.

A couple of smaller rugs will work well for the living room. Or you can always go with one large area rug strategically placed in front of the sofa. Keeping your color scheme in mind, try to choose bold patterns for this room. Intense stripes and plaids can really pick up a room, especially if you have solid-colored furniture.

Add Flair to the Windows
Although you may have to live with the mini-blinds, you can certainly add a little color! Try some sheer curtains that coordinate with your other d?cor. A boldly colored satin sheet hung above the window that cascades down the sides and onto the floor can provide some much-needed drama.

Stick to Color, Pattern, and Texture
The most important step you can take in dramatically changing the look of your rooms is to incorporate color, pattern, and texture into the mix. This means adding paint, throw rugs, big fluffy pillows, and other decorating accessories. Those big pillows are great for floor seating when you have several guests come to visit, so it?s a good idea to keep some on hand anyway.

Keep Furniture to a Minimum
In order to attain that spacious feel, be sure to keep your furniture to a minimum. Low-profile furnishings that don?t have arms will contribute to the open feeling. Items such as coffee or end tables should be kept simple. Stay away from anything that?s too big or bulky.

With a few creative accents, it?s possible to create an apartment that looks and feels like home. A little imagination can go a long way when it comes to create an attractive, livable space.
